Nope. You need to interact with them as soon as possible and as often as possible during the first 2-3 days. Every time I put my hand in the brooder bin Pippin (my singleton hatchling) comes running to investigate, while Buffy, Willow, Chip and Monk, the Tractor Supply chicks, think it's the...
This came yesterday, and I am officially in love 🥰 . After the absolutely constant tinkering and watching the Hova-bator had, (I now know why they called it a Hova-bator - you have to hover over it all the time,) it's absolutely mind blowing that you can almost literally "set it and forget it."
@PrettyCoolChicks I'm so sorry about the duckling. Between you, @junior67 , and me, it sounds like quite a few people are having trouble with this hatch. A friend of mine many years ago would always nod wisely and say "Sunspots." It seems as good a reason as any. Fingers crossed for your last 3...
Pippin (tentatively), is the lone survivor from a batch of 14 shipped eggs. My trials and tribulations are in the June, 2025 Hatch-a-long. Long story short, the Hova-bator 1602N incubator I used would not keep a stable temperature. In retrospect I think I might have gotten a 50% hatch if the...
And here s/he is: The $200 Chick ($500 if you count the $300 I spent in a fit of frustration on the Brinsea that's coming today,)
I'm going to give the Hova-bator away, but I'm going to STRONGLY suggest that whoever ends up with it gets a new wafer for it if they're serious.
I shouldn't...
Well, chick #2 hatched. Unfortunately it was severely deformed - its brain was outside its head, possibly caused by high temperature during early incubation from one source I saw, and I had to euthanize it ☹️.
So Ms. Fuzzy Toes is the sole survivor. I'll call up Tractor Supply in a few hours...
That pip doesn't appear to have progressed any beyond what it shows in the vid. It's taking every bit of self-control I have to keep my hands off it. I'll be taking Ms. Fuzzy Toes out of the incubator in the morning regardless after taking some precautions to try to keep as much humidity as...
When little Ms. Fuzzball moves around my Blink cam notifies me that "There is a person at your chicks."
Methinks they need to work on their ID technology a tad.
4:10 this morning.
I was fretting about this chick/egg all night so didn't get very much sleep. I was terrified it was going to get shrink-wrapped. At least I could check via my phone.
Oh, and the other egg appears to have a pip!
I have a pip 😲 .
Day 19. These are bantam cochins. The average weight of the eggs was only about 38g.
Color me astonished. Still a long way to go, but I suppose that's something.
I am DONE with the Hova-bator. It takes constantly fiddling to get it to the proper temperature range, and once you get it there it seems fine, but as soon as you turn your back on it, the temp is either too high or too low again. You think you've got an idea of how far to move the adjusting...
Got a crate at PetSmart yesterday and the invalid is ensconced therein. I might put the divider that came with it in to reduce the space a bit more to encourage her to stay put. She's preening, eating and drinking, and her head and tail are mostly up (except when I took the picture of course,)...
It might do, although I didn't want to mess with it too much. P!nk is just at 3 months, and they're fed Purina Organic Starter/Grower from TS with a bit of Cluck & Co. Organic scratch usually every day along with the occasional handful of dried mealworms. She seems to be eating and drinking fine.
Aaaaand, the 14-day candle isn't any better. The two questionable are definitely clear, and two look like they're quitters. I'm down to two from fourteen and no guarantees that they'll hatch.
P!nk has been limping for about a week now, reluctant to come down or up the ramp, and not really wanting to put weight on one of her legs. Of course, you usually think the first and worst ("OMG! Marek's!") Mr. RoseHawke is usually the one to let the girls out in the morning, and they're usually...
