    Fixing a bent ankle

Everyone will eventually have to deal with a chick that had a problem hatching. When a chick takes too long struggling to get out of the shell the bones will begin to harden as chick takes in more oxygen. Being cramped, the feet and toes will be curled against the inside of the shell, once the...

You roll the dice and take your chances, it doesn't always work out but with practice everything gets better.

Welcome #2 & #1 (in that order) - and a cautionary tale of eggs and chicks

Was there something written on the egg to identify them from the breeder?

Help, do I step in with the hatch?

The normal position is for the head to be tucked under the wing. Zipping is a short process and normally only takes a couple of hours, sometimes only a few minutes. If they stop for more than a couple of hours they are probably stuck.

Help, do I step in with the hatch?

Most of the time if the chick has zipped half way around the egg it is safe to pop the top off and make sure it hasn't stuck to the shell so it can kick out. But the late hatches and the ones that struggle can have other problems that will insure that your actions will probably kill it. It is...

Too much Green blood in it to be able to tell any time soon. You may as well get it DNA sexed.

    Getting ready for lockdown

Feel like Columbo do you? ;) Easy, don't handle them. Hand feed them so they know you as the provider of goodies but don't hold or pet them. They are all different, just like your kids are, but as long as they don't get the idea they are 'above' you they will be less likely to flog you when...

    Getting ready for lockdown

We set our incubator at 45% and the hatcher at 60%. 65% should be fine since your eggs have lost the 15%.

    Getting ready for lockdown

The porosity of the shell will dictate how much moisture is lost during the incubating process and can extend the timing if it is thicker. It could extend pipping by a few hours to a day or so. Sometimes the embryo can look like it is retarded but will still hatch along with the other eggs...

    Peachick with possible coccidia

It can go by a couple of different names, Panacure, Baycox, but the active ingredient is Toltrazuril. It also comes in two different strengths, the 5% you have found and 2.5%. Preracehorse.com has smaller bottles, maybe four or six ounces, I don't remember for sure since I buy it by the liter...

    Peachick with possible coccidia

Baytril is better than Tylan for infections like this. Chicks can have bacterial infections right out of the egg or picked up in the hatcher and in your case maybe from the poults. I am more inclined to think it was egg related. Cocci takes time to develop, it has to multiply the protozoa and...

    Peachick with possible coccidia

There is no way a five day old chick is sick with cocci. If you are seeing runny poo sticking to its vent then it has a bacterial infection, probably one of the coli bacteria. Give it one drop of Baytril or Tylan 100 for five days in a row.

Definitely a Hybrid with that coloring along with the tight crest, heavy barring, and long neck and legs. BTW, she is a hen.

    Sinus Infection on Peahen?!

She is perfectly healthy, her only problem is the clogged nares. Spray with Vetricyn to soften and remove with a Q-Tip if you are so inclined. Be sure that your birds have deep water dishes to drink from, they will submerge their nares in water when they drink to help keep the nares clean and...
