    Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

All ten chickens made it back into the run and they're locked up safe for the night. But one of them is kind of stupid. It watched the others go through the doorway but it wouldn't, and just kept running around like it didn't know what to do. Finally, she jumped through the doorway and made it...

I miss seeing those storms. I watched a few from the La Sal mountains in Arizona as they passed over the Colorado river valley near Quartzsite. Kind of awesome.

What did you do in the garden today?

I let my teenager New Hampshire pullets out to forage and explore for the first time. They already know how to eat fresh grass. LOL

What did you do in the garden today?

I'd be cooking those weird male bulb things up in some stir fry. The look like they'd be tasty.

I thought that the teenagers could use some distraction so I let them out of the run into the big wide world to see something new and to try their hands at foraging. I have the young chicks locked up in the coop/secure run area right now getting used to it. I gave them a bowl of wetted down feed...

What did you do in the garden today?

I got a prescription for prednisone today to help with my shoulder injury, happened July 3rd. My feet got tangled up and I fell like a tree, landing full force on my right shoulder. On asphalt pavement. Hurt like H E double toothpicks, and it pretty much paralyzed my shoulder joint for several...

What did you do in the garden today?

Is planting buckwheat for a cover crop something you've done for some years, and does it help the garden a lot? I've never planted a cover crop but wanted to. I just have a hard time spending money for seeds for something I'm not going to eat. LOL

Are the littles at 12 weeks or so?

What did you do in the garden today?

Tomorrow I'll add some kind of extension to the Blue Lake pole bean trellis. It's only around 5 feet tall. I'm really curious as to how long I can get the vines to grow. My setup will allow them to grow along some ropes another 20 feet or so if they can reach that far. I think I have a couple...

What did you do in the garden today?

Are you growing buckwheat for a cover crop or is it something you eat? Or feed to the chickens?

What did you do in the garden today?

I need to do the same thing. I want to get fall kale and collards started and need to find seeds of a good variety of fall cabbage. I think that'll be the last of my planting this year, except for planting garlic in October. Nice thing is in this weather I don't have to start seeds in starter...

    Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

I went to Wa Ortho for my shoulder injury this afternoon and the PA was encouraged that she could move my arm around and it was pain free, even though it hurts when I move it under its own power. Encouraged because it's a sign that the rotator cuff isn't injured. I got a prednisone prescription...

I picked some tomatoes today. Diced. From the grocery store shelf.

Those are gourmet baby carrots! My carrots are also small but I'll leave them in the ground until late this fall. Once cooler weather and rain hits they should take off and grow a lot more.

I got an email today that linked to this article about Washington state pollinators/bees and the volunteer program. https://agr.wa.gov/about-wsda/news-and-media-relations/news-releases?article=44313&culture=en-US&utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery

Mine eat apples but don't go crazy for them. And I'm not going to have many this year. My apple tree seems to bear fruit heavily one year and is nearly devoid of apples the next. Last year the tree was loaded, this year I can see maybe a dozen or so. Like it or not for the young cockerels and...

What did you do in the garden today?

I stand corrected. LOL The tomato plants I have growing in full sun all day long are growing kind of tall too. The tomatoes that get sun only half the day are shorter and bushier. Weird.

Looks like that plant is stretching upward to find some sunlight.

What did you do in the garden today?

The Black seeded Simpson lettuce I planted rarely gets watered, but it continues growing for some reason. Baby cabbages are forming on the cabbage stumps. Butternut squash plants are doing great in the chicken run woodchip compost pile. They definitely won't need any fertilizer. I'm hoping...

What did you do in the garden today?

Looks like I'll have plenty of Snow Pea seeds for next year if they're viable. Most of the Blue lake bean plants next to the onions and shallots are doing great, but a few are stunted. Those might be growing in a spot where I pulled a couple onions up to plant the seeds. I read that if beans...
