I let Widget out of the broody crate late this afternoon. She's still making her pre-broody noise: bup-bup-bup-bup. I closed off the nest boxes. I hope to see her on the roost with the other ladies in a few minutes. Really, Widget... it's too hot for you to be in the crate or...

What did you do in the garden today?

What do you do with the dead canes? I'd heard that they can harbor pests over the winter, so I burned them in the burn barrel.

    Stormcrow's Hobby Farm

Is it a problem hatching a single turkey poult? Will it hang out with the chickens? Or do you have to integrate it into your turkey flock?

    Isn’t fermented feed alcoholic??

Regarding kombucha... I make my own. It is non-alcoholic. I can knock back a 16 oz bottle on an empty stomach and my 120 lb body does not even get to the "feeling good" stage. The grocery store I shop at sells only the "may contain trace amounts of alcohol" kind of kombucha, and anyone can buy...

What did you do in the garden today?

The purpose of the buckwheat is to keep the weeds at bay. It sprouts quickly, has decent sized leaves right away, and thus shades out the weeds. If it flowers, that would be great for the honeybees. It doesn't fix nitrogen, and doesn't tolerate frost at all, so I don't have to worry about it...

Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Deer have taken all the leaves off my hostas. The plants are about 10 feet from the front porch.

Your tagline, "Finding success by learning from failure" makes me think of a book I recently read. Antifragile: Things that Gain from Disorder by Nassim Nicholas Taleb Highly recommended!

What did you do in the garden today?

Just as a cover crop. The first frost will kill it. If it blooms, so much the better! The honeybees can visit the flowers.

    Our Backyard Bee Journey!💗🐝

We got this much: 10 quart jars. They hold a quart if filled to the rim, so this isn't really 10 quarts. :) The bucket of strained honey weighed 36 pounds.

    Is this rude?
