Hiya, and welcome to BYC! :frow
A breeder who doesn't respond twice is rather strange to me.
Silkies will have five feathered toes, are usually vaulted (big poof on head), might have beards, are fuzzy, and stay fuzzy. That one growing feathers is indeed a satin silky versus a regular...
I would not be feeding my show-quality silkies anything I didn't think would be great for them to grow well, look good, and help prevent the vitamin deficiencies they are known for getting.
I started on Dumor crumbles from TSC for the adults and chick starter for the chicks on up to laying age...
I would just leave her alone for at least a couple of more days. Some hens get off their nests more than others, and for longer periods than others. It can all add up to a slight delay. I wouldn't worry just yet. :)
We bought a new one at Menards. They happened to be on sale while we were already driving the hour to get there for other stuff. It was $10 cheaper than the equivalent at Walmart. We only need it for a week or two usually. We'd be due for another bout of this heat in August. This one is...
So much can change with chicks as they grow into adults. Seven weeks can be a good indicator, but nothing is ever a guaranteed sign they will stay the way they are at seven weeks to adult. Especially true for cockerels.
When I'm choosing who to keep at a young age, it's more their appearance...
I wouldn't put it in their feed. Hens know when they need more or not. It should be in a separate dish or feeder. If they need more, they'll eat it. If it sits there, they're fine. Making them eat more of it could cause issues with their kidneys or elsewhere.
I agree!
The problem is, that one in your picture you posted is probably about six months away of you knowing true temperament.
Cockerels go through hormone release and some you may not notice as much as others. A mean one at three or four months old may be a charmer at eight months, and...
It sounds like she might be lacking calcium. Do you supply the hens with oyster shell? I'd give that a try.
Otherwise, what feed are they getting?
Eggs can sometimes subtly change color as a hen ages or after molting, but this usually occurs over time, not suddenly, although you said she...
If you think they're hungry and want to take no chances, you can buy a large bag of the cheapest cat food you can find, place it in a large bowl or small bucket, and set it by the tree they're in.
A hungry opossum will take chances to get in on the eggs, but if he's full, he wouldn't bother.
Hi,
In total over the years, I've received probably 15 different shipments of silkie hatching eggs.
I've incubated over 500 eggs this year alone, most of them mine, but many shipped ones. I invariably always have one hatching a day or two early, whether my own, or shipped. Thus, I do a...
I doubt you could "live stream" indefinitely with these, but we've been using the Blink cameras for nearly a decade. Amazon is where we get them. We've got about 8 or so. A couple in the coops, but we have the motion off on those or the chickens would set them off constantly. Mostly those...
Many of us find threads or articles that answer their questions and post them. That's easiest, especially if it's a complex question, like some breeding questions can be. I think that's a subtle hint too, that the answer was already here.
I didn't go look at your examples, but if one thread...
Hiya, and welcome to BYC, Mahlea! :frow
I agree with @FrostRanger that heat can definitely impact the laying of eggs. We installed an air conditioner in our breeding coop a few weeks ago, and it appears to be helping.
Newer layers can be irregular and unpredictable too, but it doesn't...
In the new member's forum, some of us explain how to find articles about raising chicks and chickens, and how to search the Forums tab. I suppose we could also try explaining searching, but to be honest, if I'm searching for something in BYC, I'm sometimes better off using Google, as that'll...
I'm mostly familiar with trying to sex silkies which is pretty much not until they are four months old, and even then, some won't be definite. It's mostly their combs and hackles, and later, their tail feathers.
