26/07. Three hours. Dry but cloudy. This is what I would like at least some of the extended run to look like. Something in the ground that's edible. On their way home.

We've had a huge blackberry crop this year and it's at least a month early.

How a cockerel or rooster treats his hens is what decides for me whether he stays or goes. I don't really care about his behaviour towards me, mostly there is way to come to an understanding. It reads to me that you've kept Big Red because you like him, not because the hens do and that in my...

He has mentioned how the particular breed he keeps came into being and I expect he's mentioned which breeds they were but I can't remember what they were. They're a Land Race breed and from what I have gathered there is no "look" as such. It's the Land Race bit that interests my friend, not the...

Windy hill chickens - first flock(s) of my own

I do it every night. Not because their crops need checking every night, more that they get used to me touching them and this helps a lot when I have to remove one from the coop to attend to something like mite inspection. I gave up chasing chickens years ago. None of the field lot apart...

Windy hill chickens - first flock(s) of my own

I do most of the crop checks when they are on their roost bar just before shutting them in for the night. They get used to it. Some still tend to shuffle along the roost bar if I take too long over it.

Two and a half hours. Rather cloudy but warm enough at 21C. More courgettes. This last batch of onions haven't done as well as those I planted earlier. One the other hand small onions do well when cooking for one.

She's a precocious brat. Honestly, you wouldn't want her.:p Just one of the many sad things about the Red Sex Link Ex Battery hens is I thought most of them looked lovely. The Golden Comet Red Sex Link easily competes with the Buff Orpington for cuddly.

I haven't looked. Not yet. The only way I know it's the same one as yesterday is, so far, no other Jackdaw will get that close or me or the chickens. While no doubt they don't all look the same they do all look very similar. The grey at the back of the neck is helpful and of course size. It...

Now here's a thing. I've read a lot of stuff on BYC about assisted hatching, mostly where the eggs have been incubated in a machine. One could end up believing that a hen isn't capable of assisting her own chicks to hatch and if the hen doesn't help then there is something wrong with the hen. It...

Four hours today. Cloudy, humid but stayed dry. It was feast day today for Mow and Sylph. The young ants left their nests today; they come out with wings. It's all over in a couple of days. There were thousands of them all over the field. I don't think Mow and Sylph stopped eating the entire...
