Hey Walli!
Really looking forward to meeting you!.... since our messages I've been reading up on the SFH and am more and more excited about them! My roos are doing alright. I've got two 16 week old red star roos that I should really get rid of or make into dinner, but they're still so charming...
Do you eat as many eggs a day as they are producing? Most people with chickens in my area sell the eggs (anywhere from $2.00-$5.00 a dozen with the average at $3.00 a dozen) to help cover the feed costs.
A good number of my chickens are still on crumble grower feed which makes a horrible...
How old are these cuties? They say week 10 is when you can tell polish for sure. This one's top hat makes me lean towards male but his/her saddle feathers are still a little rounded IMO. It'll be interesting to see. :) I love the color on this one!
My mother in law used to run a dog kennel on our farm and people used to mistake "Kennel" for "shelter." We get several dogs and cats dropped off every year. Most we find homes for but a couple we've kept... like my great dane/blue heeler mix. He's the best chicken guard dog ever! :) So...
Hi! I'm from Northern Kentucky in a small town between Crittenden and Walton. :)
I'm waiting on the delivery of my first incubator and am dieing to try it out. Does anyone locally sell hatching eggs? (I'd rather pick up than deal with the risks associated with shipping hatching eggs-...
I have red stars that I LOVE!!! Super friendly little birds. I heard that because they are bred to lay so much and start so early that they very often stop laying after a couple of years. Another BYC member told me that you can extend their laying life by not introducing lights during the...
Dust baths are definitely the epitome of "happy chickens!" I think seeing them so happy is the only reason I don't mind to see my mulch beds destroyed!
do you know how they're getting into the coop? Is it chicken wire or a door with a simple latch? I agree with trapping them... or making sure your coop is secure.
Hi! Welcome to BYC!
Go up to the top of the page and type in "chicken breeding pens." There are many many threads with loads of pictures... just start clicking through them. Inspirational. I'm getting ready to build a breeding pen myself. Good luck!
LOL. I figured as much - I just thought it was an interesting observation on her part (or whoever taught her.)
I'm not too worried about their sex at this time as they were free but I was just curious. :) It'll be neat to watch them get older and see if perhaps her "voodoo" methods were...
Hi!
I'm looking for a silkie breeder that might have some older chicks or juveniles in the Northern Kentucky area. Anywhere from North of Lexington to La Grange to North of Cincinnati Ohio. Does anyone have any recommendations?
Thanks.
It's a good start! I would definitely invest the $10 dollars into making your website millerschicks.com instead of millerschicks.webs.com. It shows professionalism, is more memorable to potential customers and is very inexpensive to do.
Make sure to fill every page with lots of text and...
I posted this elsewhere on the site but didn't get a response so I'm trying here:
I just adopted 2 3 month old silkies. The original owner told me that there was a male and a female. Based on their antics alone, I'd say she's probably right, but when I asked her how she was able to tell...
Not sure where to post this so I thought I'd tack it on the end of this very wonderful silkie thread. :)
