I’ve raised mallard ducklings from hatcheries before and I have hatched my own from eggs I bought from hatcheries. I know that mallards are supposed to be marked either with a hole punched out of their webbing or by removing a toe. I’ve always removed the right back toe when they are a few days...
After I posted this last night I continued my search and found something about coconut oil being a sort of laxative and safe for chicks. So I gave this girl some coconut oil before going to sleep last night. She seems to be doing a lot better today, definitely has pooped since then as she looks...
A couple things I forgot that might also help figure things out. The abdomen is hard not squishy. I have them on non medicated chick starter, she has a heat lamp in the brooder, and I use big shavings for the bedding. The shavings are much to large for them to possibly eat. Also her vent is a...
I have a 2ish week old chick that has a swollen abdomen almost like it can’t poop. It had pasty butt last week but it cleared up. Now today it’s back end is swollen. What can I do to help it? Is there anything I can do to make it poop?.
It’s wet because I cleaned its vent to see better what...
I’ve got 6, 1 month old mix ducklings looking for their new pond. 5 are females and 1 is a male. My wish is for everyone to go together or at least the females if no one is wanting a male. $30 for all 6 or $25 if just taking the 4 females (that’s $5 apiece) Im located in Gray summit, labadie...
I have 6 ducklings that are looking for a new home. There are 5 females and 1 male. Mom I think is my mallard and the dad is a mallard, pekin mix. The ducklings were born on March 15th 2023. I’m wanting $30 for all 6 ducklings (that’s $5 each) I’m wanting them all to go together but I’m willing...
Unfortunately I can’t put the chickens in the garden as I actively have plants growing in there right now and the grass is all over my entire garden. But I do have the ducks in there as they won’t really bother the plants. But I think what I’m going to do is weed the rows, and leave the grass in...
I need help. My freshly tilled and mounded vegetable garden is covered in grass. The last few years I have been battling grass. I’ve tried the vinegar, dawn dish soap and epsom salt solution. Weed paper and newspapers covered in straw. I don’t really want to use herbicides or harsh chemicals as...
My boy Chicken Nugget is almost a year old now and is doing so good. He pulled a muscle by his hip a few months ago keeping the others safe from a hawk. Also because he is missing the tips of his toes on one foot he has this adorable weird sideways run. I love this boy so much and I’m glad he...
Only some of that is what I said. These chicks I haven’t taken outside I didn’t have the chance to let them experience the outside temps, and I use a heat lamp at 80 in a room that’s in the high 70s. I don’t move them to a different room, unless someone is going to use cleaning sprays, cleaning...
Yep pretty much. The hatchery even told me that I killed my chicks with the way my brooder is set up, and they have done nothing for me because they have no reports of other peoples birds dying, so they also blamed me. No one here is really blaming me everyone seems to agree with me for the most...
With this new version though I’ve seen more good reviews than bad. I did it as a different alternative to a heat lamp that can not only cook chicks but set fires as well. She is the only one in her 40 gallon plastic tote so it is big enough for her to get away from any heat. Also the tote is...
But like I’ve said using those recommendations I have cooked several different batches of my chicks before. So usually I keep it lower and watch the chicks behavior to tell me if I need to adjust the temps of the lamp. The chicks know what temp is to hot or to cold better than what something on...
So usually I raise my chicks in the early summer and don’t really use a heat lamp unless the night temps are to cold or I let my broodies do it. But now I hav a Brinsea ecoglow heating plate coming in the mail, so I will be switching to that.
No I never had the chance to put them out on the deck. They were in temp controlled rooms with a heat lamp. After the first batch I got rid of the old lamp and got a new one in case it was that. But no matter which thermometer I used on each lamp they would read 80. The chicks never showed signs...
Yes I know that but they never showed signs of being hot no panting or piling up in corners on the other side of the brooder. They would only really be under it when they slept other than that they were always running around doing normal happy chick things and making happy noises.
Why she is actually doing good right now, even though she is having a problem with her toe pads, and one of her toes dying. I took off the toe yesterday day and she seems to be favoring that foot a little less today.
