At this point we are thinking about putting in a higher fence with permanent wooden posts, and electrifying horizontal at multiple heights...... next spring. In the mean time, I do have a bit of good news to share: my favorite chicken, Miss Prissy, is ALIVE!!!! She must have been hiding all...
It is this one:

It is a temporary fence. It has worked for us for 5 years, but we've never had coyotes before either.
Does anyone have any suggestions for a fence that will keep out coyotes? We have a Premier electric poultry fence which for 5 years has successfully kept out foxes, racoons, skunks, and other critters living in our area. Last weekend 5 of my flock of 10 hens disappeared. We suspected coyotes...
I had good luck by asking neighbors who had lived in the area longer than we had. If you have any neighbors with big farm animals all the better - large animal vets virtually always make housecalls, though it may cost you a pretty penny!
A sick or ill bird often will also stay in the nest box because it can be safe from other birds there. Will not protest when you are near the nest. When walking will often look wrong tail will droop, chicken might walk and then lay down again. An ill bird might lay.
Yes, more like this...
Okay, phew! She is the only one of my ladies to have them. Too bad she hasn't learned to use them to defend herself - she is on the bottom of the pecking order.
My one year old silver laced wyandotte Miss Prissy has spurs. I am sure she is a girl because she is very prissy and she lays eggs.
Is this normal? Here is a picture of her spurs:
My two year old Red Star Olivia (in my avi) has been acting broody the last couple of days. Yesterday I brought her out of the coop and she drank some water. She had very watery stool. Today I found that she was sitting on an egg with a very soft shell that was cracked open and smooshed. The...
That is too bad about your RIR. We've had the fence for almost 2 years now, and no problems - keeps the family dog and foxes out, so overall for us I would say the benefits have far outweighed the risks. I'm sorry about your red though.
I fed crickets to my babies while they were in the brooder and they loved them. It was so funny to watch them - one would catch a cricket, then run around with it cheeping - chicken keep-away!
We just got back from the 4H fair, and my 5 month old Orpingtons and Australorps are nowhere big as the hens there, but they just started laying. At what age do chickens stop growing? Thanks in advance!
