    Too many eggs?!?

She does have the oyster shell in there at her disposal but they never touch it. My girls free range so I don't think they need it that much or they just don't like it? It is very hot here still. We are about to get a big storm that may cool it down a bit for a day or so but it's still very high...

    Too many eggs?!?

Oh, ok I will give that a try. We also put apple cider vinegar in her water, that should still be alright a? Could the fact that her poop having visible (undigested) grains still in it be a sign of the worms also? Thanks for all the help :) Oh, another question is how soon after the girls...

    Too many eggs?!?

It's defiantly Greta. I see her in the box and go get the egg as soon as she comes out. The other babies have never been in the nesting box. They are still out in the chicken tractor all day because of hawks. So the only time they are even near the box is at night when they are all in the coop...

    Too many eggs?!?

I just never wanted to give them meat stuff, no real other reason. We feed our girls all organic so I just wanted to keep them on a veggie diet. They do get fish skin though whenever we have fish for meal. Speaking of such they will get a nice piece of trout skin tonight

    Too many eggs?!?

Well there are a few things. She didn't go an 8th day but did start back up on the 9th day. She missed the 10th and laid again today. So she may be back to normal? To answer your first question the babies will be five months old in about three weeks. (We are here in Florida) Also, yes the...

    Too many eggs?!?

It's defiantly her because my other birds are still babies and have not started laying yet. Probably not for a couple more months yet. Greta is in the box every day and since the other babies aren't laying I'm quite sure it's her. All my other adult birds have gone on to be with Jesus. Before...

    Too many eggs?!?

So my three year old barred rock stopped laying just about a year ago. So just two weeks ago she started laying again. Last week and the week before she laid normally. But this week she's laid seven days in a row. She didn't do that even in her prime. She was maybe a 5 day in a row layer, laying...

Do you use Beneficial Insects in your garden ?

Yes and no. I do in some areas but not all and I probably don't use the right plants together. Most of the beds are dormant right now so I will try next season to do a better job of it so that the pest aren't too much of an issue. I did although plant herbs at the base of some of the boxes but...

    Got sand? You should!

Fire risk for sand? I don't think there is anything that would catch fire. I should think that wood chips would be a bigger risk for fire than sand. The only thing is the cold. I do know that many people say the deep litter method generates more heat in the winter but if you have the heat...

Do you use Beneficial Insects in your garden ?

Cover, probably not because there are too many garden beds and the yard is too big since I also put the nematodes in the lawn. Praying mantis are really cool but creepy looking. I'd love to find them in the yard but I haven't seen any. Another good bug that I'm actually going to try for the...

How to keep rodents out of my garden?

Thank you for all the info :) Let's see, I don't think I have groundhogs in my area? I'm in Central Florida. And I know there are no chipmunks. I wish we had those I've only seen one once in my life (up in Georgia) and they were pretty cool looking. The squirrels (Pete as I call him/them) has...

Do you use Beneficial Insects in your garden ?

The thing about the nematodes is that they live in the soil and are aquatic. So they need water to move about. So as long as the ground isn't soaked I don't think they can go very far. The only issue is keeping the ground wet enough so that they don't dry out and die. We are having the last of...

How to keep rodents out of my garden?

Does anyone have any tips to keep rodents out of the garden? I have all these big beautiful green tomatoes out side and as soon as they are the least bit pinkish I find them half eaten . I grew big luffa's only to find huge bites out of them and had to throw them out. All the cucumbers that...

Do you use Beneficial Insects in your garden ?

Right now, I'm using beneficial nematodes. I got them online from http://www.buglogical.com/ I purchased an acre size to use on less than 1/4 acre and as of yet I'm not really seeing that much of a difference. I know that the ground needs to stay wet so perhaps the ground hasn't been wet enough...

    Got sand? You should!

No, I don't put the sand in the nesting box. I just use wood shavings. The girls like to move the shavings around to make sort of a bed while they relax and lay. So I'd say no on the sand in the nesting box.

    Anyone growing Passion Fruit?

Thank you for responding. I did plant mine in a box but I'm finding that they are growing outside of the box. So I think after I get fruit that I may tear them all out and replant them somewhere that I don't mind them taking over. I'm glad to hear that the flowers wont effect the fruit though...

    Anyone growing Passion Fruit?

So I have this awesome Passion Fruit vine growing out in the garden and the flowers are the most beautiful I've ever seen. They are plentiful and are spreading like crazy. What I wanted to know is, where does the fruit grow from? The flowers seem to open up in a matter of moments and then close...

    Got sand? You should!

I put it into one of the dormant garden beds or an area that I want fertilized. That poopy sand makes really good fertilizer. When we dump it out the girls go picking in it for any pieces of food they may have missed and while they do so they spread it out in whatever area I put it in. I...

Why Aren't My Chickens Laying? Here Are Your Answers!

Thank you for letting me know about the protein. I got some broiler feed that is high in protein and put some calcium in there for them and it seems to have done the job. Two of my girls are laying again now and I think one of the other girls is about ready to start laying again also. So all is...
