A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

Toms can change their behavior very quickly. One that is providing warmth for a poult one day may be trying to kill it the next day. It isn't common but from time to time people report their toms sitting on eggs. Over the years I have had two different toms do so briefly. The end was always...

    Too long broody?

Physically remove her from the nest. Place an obstruction there so she cannot get back to the nest. Toms should not be allowed to have access to a hen's nest. They should not be allowed to mount a hen that is on her nest. It usually doesn't work out well for the hen. It can be helpful to...

    Too long broody?

Our Bourbon Red has been sitting on her nest for about 4 months. She doesn’t have any eggs though. She will get up and eat and drink. Her Tom will sometimes sit next to her and try to get her off the nest. He does mount her while she’s on the nest too. How do I get her off the nest?

How to protect nesting hens in pen

Once the hens have been bred, the toms don't need to be in with them. They won't need bred again until after they have hatched their eggs if allowed to do so. One method is to build a cage around the nest and make the entrance small enough that the toms cannot go through it but the hens can.

    Questions about fertile Turkey eggs.

My ladies have been laying well, and I have around 17 fertile (I’ve seen the Tom mate both of ‘em) eggs. Here’s the thing, it gets down to 40F here at night. Is that cold enough to cause issues for the eggs? One of my hens sat on them one night, but other than that they’ve been on their own. I...

Do I need a second coop? (turkey hen won't go in at night)

About 10' high. roosts are 2x4s wide side up. One at 6' and one at 4'. Everyone uses the tallest roost. Now that I think about it, maybe I need a second 6' roost. I plan to add a plastic dogloo. Hopefully the three hens can share.

Do I need a second coop? (turkey hen won't go in at night)

How tall is the inside of the coop? How high and what dimensions are the roosts? All of my turkeys sleep outside of the coop on roosts staggered from 3' to 6' tall. Their roosts are sheltered from the prevailing wind and are made from 4" diameter corral poles. For nesting season, the tom...

Multiple turkey hens on nest, misc questions

Shared nests usually end up with broken eggs and squashed poults once they hatch. Just too many moving feet in too small of an area. Each hen is an iindividual and will react according to her nature. Some hens will kill any poults that aren't theirs. More hens will adopt or even try to steal...

My Bronze Hen and Tom gave us a white baby!

I also only have 2 bronze turkeys. 2 of their eggs just hatched in the incubator and one is white! I have 2 more eggs that still need to hatch. So happy to find such knowledgeable people because for the life of me I could not figure it out

    Help Needed!!!

Another possibility is the tom having access to the nest. A tom will take a hen sitting on a nest as a invitation to breed. The unwanted breeding attempts often end up with broken eggs or injured hens. If this is the cause of the broken eggs, the hens will learn to eat the eggs as they try to...

Love that red hen. I'm hoping for one of my hens to go broody come spring so my grand kids can see a hen with chicks.

    Turkey Poult

Hello! My Turkey was sitting on 13 eggs and only one sweet baby hatched. She is a blue slate and the Tom was a bourbon red. She is much darker than I pictured her to be! Any ideas what she is gonna look like as she gets older?
