Half finished coop-chime in with advice please!

Oh good! Glad you like it. I was thinking about windows above the nests, plexiglass ones with wire behind them that can flip up and attach with a chain to the roof overhang for summer. It might make my coop look like it's batting its eyes but whatever. The floor is done, just cluttered up with...

Chicken coop roof, overhang and construction methods

Wow Folly, what a coop! I wish I had this much room. Your flock looks very happy. Thanks for the clarification on the sheeting, that makes total sense!

Half finished coop-chime in with advice please!

Hello all, I wanted to run this roofing and framing strategy by you-it’s a 3.5x7.5’ coop. I’ve built the walls and the base/floor and I made a roof today. The roof is 8 feet long, 45 in wide. I added some cross-bracing just in case. The roof is plywood wrapped in tar paper, then drip edge on...

Chicken coop roof, overhang and construction methods

My chickens have been loving pecking at the foam blocks I’ve got in my crawl space vents for winter, little monsters. The plan was to sandwich it between the OSB inner wall and the plywood siding to keep it out of reach. Do you think if I put it between the roof supports they’d jump for it?

Chicken coop roof, overhang and construction methods

Oooo really good idea! Tell me more about the clear plastic? Do you recall where you got it or what it’s original purpose was so I can look in the right area of the hardware store?

Chicken coop roof, overhang and construction methods

Caveman, you’re speaking my language! The top section that provides the roof slope (I’m calling it a “riser”) will be wire as well, hardware cloth for sure. I’ve got a good secure auto coop door and an outdoor dog so the girls are nice and safe, but hardware cloth is definitely on my mind...

    Backyard Brahmas!!

My first brahma chick is in a brooder in a spare room and I must say she's got to be the biggest cutest fattest chick I've ever had. Her Easter egger roomie is teeny in comparison. She's a hunk and so calm. Named her Hodor...

    Backyard Brahmas!!

Thanks 21hens! That's really helpful. I'm looking forward to when she grows up! Sounds like she'll be a great fit with the rest of my flock.

    Backyard Brahmas!!

Hello all, I've got a baby brahma in my brooder-my first! I've got a sturdy 2x4 roost in the coop, and also one out in the run to get the girls off the ground when they want to be. Here's my question: would a 2 foot high roost be too tall for a big brahma to hop onto?? I'm having trouble...

Review by '' on item 'Olive Egger'

My olive egger is a Marans/Ameraucana mix from mypetchicken. She is a cruddy winter layer and she makes more noise than the rest of my flock put together. Her sister is the same. It's not all that fair to rate "olive eggers" since different mixes will have different traits but this is just my...

Comment by 'washingtonwino' in media 'Pickles'

Well she was sold as a RIR but you know how that goes, almost as unreliable as araucanas/ameraucana/Easter eggers

This guy needs a home! He's a black copper Marans. This pic is a little old, his colored feathers are coming in nicely now. I bought him straight run from Simmons in tri cities. He was hatched from an egg sent directly from Little Peddler so he's got great dark layer genes. He's a beaut! Anyone...

It is snowing in Walla Walla! Chickens are NOT impressed. They are not venturing outside of their little snow-less patio. Happy winter, Eastern WA!

    The Olive-Egger thread!

My olive Eggers are 5 1/2 months old. The waiting is killing me. Trying to figure out why my marans hasn't laid an egg since September is keeping me occupied but in the back of my mind I keep counting the weeks as they go by. Cmon, olives!

The Big Fat Is This A Rooster? Thread

Your newbie eyes are correct, I think. My Australorp had very little going on in the comb/confidence/plumage department until she was 20 weeks. Handsome fellah.

July 2015 Hatch A Long HAL

I won't be putting them up for sale until they are a week old or so, so at least that will but me some time to chat with the breeder and try to figure out what's what. They are currently all together in the brooder, I tried to write down who hatched out of which egg as they hatched. Good luck...

July 2015 Hatch A Long HAL

Well I didn't make the "walls" tall enough and the chicks are now climbing all over the place. Identifying them is going to be a crap shoot! Six chicks out, one more zipping out of 30 eggs that made it to lock down

July 2015 Hatch A Long HAL

Invented a breathable way to keep chicks separate when they hatch! This is plastic mesh found in the craft aisle, it is used for cross stitch projects from what I understand. Cut slits in the carton and pushed the mesh into the slits. Terrible picture but here's the general idea. I've got F1...
