We decided to put him down, because he was pulling himself around with his wings with his legs behind him. After testing, we also found that he had almost no feeling in his legs. It was very sad, but he was pretty miserable.
Yes, in better lighting and a little cleaning, I can see it was broken. I've put him alone with his parents and temporarily moved the other birds away. We cleaned it then put some antibiotics on it. If he gets worse/doesn't get better I'll put him down, just to spare him some pain and suffering.
It looks pretty bad in the picture, however I don't think it broke bone.
I usually don't lose that many babies, because my birds aren't that broody, they almost never actually hatch their young. If they do hatch, they usually make it. This guy had the rest of the birds back with him because I...
Since I’ve never found one that’s alive (unfortunately I don’t really have enough space to keep parents separate from the rest full time), this is a first for me. He’s
almost 30 days old.
I found his grandma (!) beating him up this morning, and I’m curious about how bad you guys think he is...
There's a fancier on here who feeds his pigeons chicken feed, however I'm not sure what kind and if you can buy it in small amounts. I think it's @Hokum Coco who does that, maybe he can explain more.
Yes, most birds that I have will do that, I think that they like their wings free so they can fly away/fight your hand. But that's if I already picked it up. Is it when she is being grabbed?
So I'm not a dove expert but I do have pigeons.
1: this can vary, there is a thread somewhere about a pigeon that lives with chickens just fine, however I think your average dove would like a friend.
2: grit is always good for the birds, besides basic medicine supplies.
3: if she has no mate and...
No, sorry.
I realize that birds are notoriously hard to diagnose, because fluffing up and green, slimy poop is a fairly universal symptom. Thanks the ideas, but without pictures and a research lab I think it's very hard to be certain.
What breed do you have? I haven't been paying attention...
One of my birds recently died with not much warning. When I found it there was discharge around the eyes and around the vent the feathers were bound together by poop, it almost looked like a log. The bird had been slightly poofed up the past 2 days but since it's getting colder I ignored it...
Some breeders are really nice and refund their birds. I remember when I bought a pair of parlor rollers from a guy. One died really soon after I got them (this was before I quarantined...) and he replaced it immediately. Eventually the replacement died, too. The last was taken by a predator when...
I had some Satinettes and they took care of their babies just fine without a special diet, however they were not show quality; they had large beaks (for satinettes) so I agree, ask the previous owner that.
