I'm curious to learn what u do and how it works for you. I use pdz and I'm very happy with it. I sprinkle 4-5" of wood chips over it ( some times straw). I also feed wet feed and I think that helps by making the chicken poop dryer....although that makes no sense to me it works. I had the same...
I just found a block that I bought years ago for lasagna gardening. We put it in the run and chopped it up into small pieces and covered it with fallen leaves. We will probably get 2 or 3 bales of straw to throw in also. If and when I have food scraps they will be thrown in, too.
I didn't take it as being preachy. I do understand....I was very sick for longer than most people I've talked to. My husband had the vaccine.. but I'm as certain as I can be that he gave the virus to me. I did stay at home most of the time and wore a mask when I went out. I had actually been put...
Hi gtaus, I feel like I have been gone from here forever.
I basically do not free range any longer. Most of the past issues were foxes. Some of these chickens do fly the coop, tho. But the hawk was in the run chewing on Elvis. I have been thinking of different things I might do. Bird netting...
I haven't done very well keeping up with anything over the summer. August 12 I fell (feeding the chickens) and broke my elbow. My local hospital would not do the needed surgery and I had to cross the mountain to UVA hospital. Then I tested positive for covid before they could do the surgery. I...
Well, of my three EE pullets I think one is actually a pullet, lol. So the BYC experts were right...I love this site! The other two have red combs and definitely roo tail feathers developing. I plan to give the roosters away so I have a question. Is it possible that their (the roosters)...
I remember walking with my grandmother when she fed her chickens. I love watching them even tho I seldom pick them up. If I have extra eggs I give them away. I'm still trying to rebuild my flock and I laugh every time I get new pullets because some of them almost always turn out to be roosters...
The only dog I ever had with my chickens was great. She was a Great Dane. She seemed to like the chickens and they liked her. She ran free with them as they free ranged. She was not trained, but the predators stayed away. When she died the foxes devastated the flock. Now I have a half red tick...
Yippee!! It's so much fun to find those first eggs. I do not wash my eggs. When we ate more eggs I would keep them on the counter, now I put them in the fridge. If you don't sell or give away your eggs there is a thread here with recipes to help use them up.
Actually, my county said to use ammonia as a deterrent, but it only works for a short time if at all. I'm not sure if they still relocate. Bears come into many small cities and towns here....as well as out here in the county. We are bordering national forest so it's inevitable, I guess.
I...
