Don't feel bad.... mine can't read either~! My little hen with the comb that has been bright red for 2 weeks now and has been submitting to the roo hasn't laid an egg yet. I know I read she should be with all those signs! I guess she didn't read that tho.
Thanks guys... we will. We call her Festus... not really a girlie name but oh well.
I think I am just projecting my feelings.... I feel sorry for her because she can't keep up with the other chickens... doesn't really seem to bother her tho.
I have the same question.... will not be using mine to hatch any eggs tho so I am going to let her hang out until she starts to look bad. So far no one picks on her at all.

So the run is 360 sq. ft.? How many chickens do/will you have per sq. ft.?
Just askin'
With the 4 new chicks I will have a total of 28.... but 2 of my hens are about to be rehomed to a friend with a lonely rooster.... so 26. Also we have an additional 3x10 side coop that opens into...
I bought a pullet when she was 5 wks or so from a backyard breeder. She was kept with a zillion other chicks in a rabbit hutch. Once I got her home I realized one foot completely turned out and she limped on it (like a 45 degree angle). As she has gotten older she is barely able to use the...
So I broke the news to DH today.... we are going this afternoon! I started the conversation with 'How much do you love me' ... at which point he said 'Oh Sh...!' Considering that we started out with a 4x4 coop and a 12x12 fully enclosed run that has now expanded to 10x12 coop and 12x30 enclosed...
Don't know if its the same but I had a nasty roo that was picking on the hens (they were all about 7 wks) and I pulled him out and isolated him for a few days.... that fixed his attitude quick!
I am getting ready to plant my winter garden and started thinking it would be nice to add a few yummy things for the chickens. I was already planning to put in cabbage... but wondered if it would change the flavor of the eggs. I also have some pumpkin that I started.... any other ideas for good...
I too have had people asking me almost daily when my chickens will be in regular production. I have sold a few 18 cts but with only 6 hens laying now I can only swing 1-2 of those per week if you take into account what we use at home. We don't eat tons of eggs but I use them when I bake bread...
I wish someone would give my chickens the book that says you are supposed to start laying at X weeks, when your comb is red etc. I have seen the rooster breed a few of them and still not an egg in sight. Grrrr. Slackers is an understatement!
So I was surfing on Craig's List (bad....bad) and I saw an ad for pullets... BR and RIR... from the guy I got my hens and rooster from. I really want some younger BR and RIR EVENTUALLY..... but they are 5 wks old. I am moving my FBCM today so would have plenty of room in the quaranteen pen for...
I currently have 2 BR, 2 americana mixes and 2 FBCM that are laying.... I am getting about 32 eggs per week from the 6 hens and the ones that are on the low end of production are the Marans.
They share about 10 ft of chicken wire right now.... the Pre-K Coop (what DH calls it) runs right alongside the main coop. So they have been able to see and visit with each other for about 4 weeks now.
sorry... ate it last night... but I cracked 2 eggs last night and 1 had 1 brown floaty in the white and the other had brown specks on the yolk... several small specks. I am not dead so I guess it was okay but sure would like to know what it is. Could possibly have been blood spots?
I have read that you should integrate when they are about the same size... or full grown. I have 4 BO pullets that are supposed to be about 10 wks old but I swear they are either the same size as some of my other hens (mixed leghorn and amaracauna) or about 2/3 the size (BR and FBCM). I also...
I started out with some mixed breed chicks and have now become chicken addicted. My DH was telling someone yesterday that I got 'into' chicks in March. Other guy said his wife too... but 3 years ago.... my wife has 6 hens what about yours??? DH mumbled 24 or something like that. He is always...

Okay, so the cuckoo marans are out. I'm looking for a dark egg layer. Sounds like a FBCM most likely.
In all seriousness, you have to be very very careful with that decision. Prepare to be a complete FBCM addict, once you see those eggs you will be hooked forever!!!
Good luck to...
