My full Aracaunas had very fluffy head, so maybe the crest is just that she kept the top fluff, genetically, but not the ear tufts. Plus aracaunas can be pretty nervous compared to other breeds, at least in my experience, so she might just have her head feathers up when she sees you. Mine often...
Looks like a girl to me -- no spurs or anything :)
In answer to the question about a black roo -- I had a pure black Aracauna roo with blue legs. He was huge, gorgeous, and mean. And tasty at six months... We spent a couple months trying to rehab him to be friendly after his hormones kicked...
Hmm, interesting... they might be hormonal, could be! They are definitely young for laying, though a few of them have been going in the nesting boxes this week and burrowing in. They have DE in with their feed and their litter, and no mites that I can see... I read somewhere that talcum powder...
They don't seem to actually be cannibalising or eating the feathers. Just pulling out tail feathers on a couple other hens (only two so far)... I've watched them do it: they'll just yank one out as the other chicken walks by and drop it on the floor. They don't play with the feathers or eat...

Great idea -- they are pretty feisty and not staying in the water for longer than it takes to drink or walk through it, but I love the idea. We'll go get some stones from outside, wash them and put them in this evening. My son loves ANY reason to collect rocks. Come to think of it, so...
food, treats, yep, there you have it! If the food makes a sound (like in a can) or you make a special noise each time, so much the better -- they'll learn to respond to that sound and come running!
My alpha girl had a much larger comb than her sister from the same mother. but yes -- check the legs -- roos also stand more erect, with longer legs usually.
Thanks! Oh, and now that I've figured out who's who in my newly arrived flock (6 :30 this am!) I see that my SS from Meyer is much smaller than the Ameracaunas and Welsummers -- a surprise, considering the EEs are suppose dto only get to about 4lbs, and the SS 7lbs... So maybe they just start...
I'm trying to figure out who's who, too. Based on the pics from the hatchery and on here, I came up with this:
The BO is easy! She's yellow. We'll probably name her Buffy, so she can kick butt and keep the flock in line, lol.
The 3 dark ones are the BA and Wyandottes.
The other five are the...
She is so cute! I'm sure she'll catch up -- And size isn't everything. My grandmother's best laying chicken (and favored companion) was a bantam who laid a double yolk egg every day for 18 years. She said the eggs were HUGE. At 15 years she was practically dead for two days, so my grandmother...
Hmm. if the legs are grey, I would guess an ameracauna, not sussex. But, I'm definitely not an expert, juuust got my first sussex and welsummers in the mail today! But I have had araucanas and most of them had grey or blue legs
Ooh, we are all so excited -- our shipment from Meyer arrived first thing (6:30) this am, and all the chicks are very alert and healthy, eating and drinking wonderfully well for the last several hours. So they all made it This was my first time ordreing from a hatchery, our other chicks we...
That's a lot of roosters! For that very reason I turned down the free chicks offered with my order... My husband was so mad when he found out. He WANTs the roos for the freezer... I assured him we may end up with a couple roos anyways
I'm curious where you ordered from? Because honestly it sounds like you didn't do anything wrong, and I'd like to avoid them in the future. It seems like the first shipment simply took too long to get there and the chicks were too stressed to make it. I am glad this shipment is faring better...
