Not sure if anyone has suggested this yet, but another good place to check is your produce manager at the local grocery. They sometimes will give you boxes of the expired produce which is still very suitable for the birds. I also have a local eatery that will scrape all the table scraps into a...
How about a roll of linoleum flooring...cut it to fit tight and you could fold or bend it to get it in the coop. You could then use a combination of pine shavings and DE layered over top of it. You could add some support underneath the wire to stabilize it for the winter, but probably wouldn't...
I know mine went through their first molt which started about four weeks ago. I still haven't seen any eggs since the molt started.......How long before they start laying again and is there anything I can do to prompt them back into laying...?
Mine are about the same age....we got them in Feb 09 as day olds....man there are 25 of them and the feathers are everywhere...not sure how long it lasts but I need some more eggs...
My wife and I used it to build our first coop. It is really easy to do if you follow the materials list and directions. The hardest part is getting it "square" and doing the roof. I have very little building experience and I think it went very well.
I used the Fast Framer Kit that joehafner suggested. I have very little building experience. My wife and I put it together in just a couple of days. We then took a bit more time to customize it, but it certainly makes a job easy.
Thank you all for the replies. I have read the articles and really not sure which way to go with her. She of course is one of the friendliest birds in the flock and hate to see her suffering.
The spinach may have been too much for them and don't think I will feed it again.
The run is fairly...
I am not sure on the breed...I got 21 in a rainbow pullet pack from Meyer. She is brown with white spots and some blue purple colors in her feathers. She is kept in a run/coop combo with 20 other birds. It is 8'wide by 23' long. I have been feeding Purina Start and Grow crumbles. Yesterday...
I read some threads on here about crop issues, but can't seem to find an answer right away. I went out this morning and found one of my girls who is almost 12 weeks laying limp next to the feeder. She now has a large lump in her lower chest area. She seems to be eating and drinking okay, but...
I ordered from Meyer and they shipped on a Monday and my post office called Tuesday at 530 pm and my wife sped to the post the office and picked them up. We skipped our baby class at the hospital to care for the chicks. I would wonder why you haven't received them yet as well.
Be ready for...
One important thing to consider is if for some freak reason the electricity goes out while you sleep and you don't realize it. I guess this could happen either way...inside or outside, but they are much likelier to survive a power outage indoors.
I got called today by Meyer Hatchery. They will ship my 25 chicks on Feb 23. I ordered the Rainbow All Pullet Pack. I guess I better get the utility room set up for the brooder. I'm really hoping for an early spring now!
Great looking coop! Those redwoods are tremendous! The idea of sharing them between three families is also a neat one as well. I hope it works out for you.
What are the measurements on the barn tin? It is not hard to put shingles up and surely if you are going to tackle the fast frame kit you can tackle the shingles. If you are going to use the tin I would suggest just making a square building with a sloped roof. It should be fairly easy to do. If...
I used the fast framer kit. Check out my BYC page for the starting and ending photos. I think it went very well. Let me know if you have any more questions about it. I can show you some in between photos as well. Good Luck!
Perhaps it is diet that makes them freckled? I'm new to this like so many on here and just thrilled with it either way.
Do you think if she consistenly has been laying in the nest box she would just lay one in the poop?
The other thing I should have added was every egg up till this one has been laid in the nest box. This freckled brown egg was laid under the roost in the poo....I guess I'll just trying to keep catch the girls in action.
I had golf balls in the nest box until the first few eggs were laid then...
I've been getting a small white egg, a light to medium brown egg about once a day or every other day, but today I went out and found a medium brown egg with freckles on it. Could it be possible that the egg came from the same one laying the brown egg or is the freckled egg from a totally...
Fine job...You could always build them some sort of overhang off the back and sides to give them cover from the hawks. Also of course aviary netting is fairly cheap. The coop does look great though. A fine building and some fine birds in that picture! Good Luck!
