    Duck and chicken interactions

Hello, I'm in my second year of raising chickens. Love my five pretty ladies who are doing an amazing job of giving me eggs even in the dead of winter right now with no heater or artificial light. I suspect part of the good laying is that I let them out to free range when I arrive home in the...

    Free ranging pros and cons?

I recently bought some bird netting from Lowes. It's pretty cheap, and I just prop it up around the plants I don't want the chickens eating. It's one way of keeping them out of the garden. This evening I went out to weed a space I want to start planting. My three older girls came over to "help."...

How cold is too cold to let my girls into the run?

Buy a cheap tarp. Once they're about 5 or 6 months old they'll probably be fine as long as there's good ventilation. Mine don't mind running around in the rain, and aren't bothered running around in the snow either.

    Free ranging pros and cons?

I started my girls out in a run. It was a simple setup, an older dog cage with a tarp over the top to protect from the elements. I intended to build something nicer and more secure. But my Easter Egger had no patience. She was quite the little cage-breaker, and taught the other two how to do the...

How's it working out. I have that same barn board for my own coop, but I figured I'd have to do another layer on the inside to keep it easy to clean. Have you noticed any issues?

So much fun, and it explained a few things about why my birds behave the way they do when I'm fiddling around with their space.

New Chicken Mommy Needs Help Determining Breeds :D

They're all super cute! That's about all I can say for certain. The two golden with brown wings look like my RIR did when she was little, but I'm thinking you just might have to wait until they're older to know for sure.

    free ranging question.....

With mine I kept them in their run until I get home from work, then allow them to free-range in the evening for a while. I still prefer this method, but I get home around 2:30pm, so that's lots of time for them to enjoy themselves. They also frequently get the full day on weekends to roam. I'll...

New Chicken Mommy Needs Help Determining Breeds :D

I'm pretty new at this myself. And when they're that young I can't tell at all. There's so many breeds. Did the person you got them from even have a general idea of what they could be?

Questions before I put my chicks outside

They're still pretty young. I'd put food and water inside for now. It might be too cold for them. Or it might be them getting used to the new surroundings. But I'd put food and water inside until they're feeling a bit more brave and daring. You might also put in a thermometer, at least on the...

Review by '' on item 'Easter Eggers'

On New Year's Day at 6am I awoke to a LOUD bwok bwok bwoking outside my window. I'd fogotten to shut the coop the night before and my Easter Egger had flown her coop for some early morning free-ranging and encountered a cat. I sent the dog out to chase off the cat, then struggled to catch the...

    Getting chickens soon, HELP!

Depending on how many you're willing to keep, maybe you could mix things up and still get a silkie. I love keeping a variety of different hens. Each one has a fun, unique personality. And it allows me to balance my different wants. I currently have an Easter Egger who is my favorite and gives me...

    Time to Clip Wings!!1

I ended up adding a tarp over the top of my coop's run to keep the girls from getting out. My dog so far just likes chasing and nipping at them, but after coming home from church and finding her carrying an indignant hen around by her butt-feathers it was time to lock-down the coop and work on...

    Rain and chickens??

Mine love the rain. I wish they didn't love it so much. It gets hard to tell if they've been playing in the mud or had a row with my dog. Or both.
