Just to get my 2 cents in........... I love the orpingtons. They practically insist on being pets but are also great egg layers. However, my all time favorite is the Australorp for long life and the most eggs. I've had 2 of them live to 8 years old and counting... My 7 year old thinks she is part human and really should be living in the house with us!

Depending on how many you're willing to keep, maybe you could mix things up and still get a silkie. I love keeping a variety of different hens. Each one has a fun, unique personality. And it allows me to balance my different wants. I currently have an Easter Egger who is my favorite and gives me green eggs, but she doesn't lay as often as my Rhode Island Red and Golden Sex Link. So those two keep me in eggs. All three are super friendly just because I'm out there every day playing with them a bit. Have fun with them, and good luck!
