I posted a photo of this girl a couple of weeks ago
when she was much smaller. Here is a more recent photo, she is in front with the dark head...does anyone know what breed this might be?
Thanks in advance :-)
Here they are several weeks older! The little one really intrigues me, is she a bantam? She is so much smaller than the rest! I am thinking she isn't a Delaware from the photos I have seen, but I have no idea what she is!
I only have two red sex-linked hens (I live in a residential neighborhood). Yesterday was 8 degrees and I got an egg from each. They have consistently given us two eggs a day all through the winter.
This is Scarlett, we got her as a started pullet last June. She has been awesome! A wonderful layer and very tame and sweet to boot. I think she'd live in the house if we'd let her
Thank you philbfarm! A bit ago I heard loud clucking, went outside and our little Scarlett has laid her first little egg as well, lol! And i see Sally is in her box again!
I'm not sure what to do.... Will they just keep laying? Should I leave the eggs with them for awhile?
So much to learn!
They are doing quite a bit better. Sally (the original) does chase Scarlett from the feed and water dishes with a peck or two, and if she is sitting somewhere and Scarlett gets too close, she chases her off. But she hasn't injured her at all, and with separate feeder/waterers at opposite ends of...
Congrats on your new friend, from one newbie chicken owner to another! My husband found our very first chicken about 2 and a half weeks ago on the freeway! Its been a bit nervewracking trying to get everything set up the right way, but we've built her an enclosure, and we got her a friend a...
Well, here I am again!
Saturday we went to the hatchery and picked up a golden buff pullet (they only had one extra). We named her Scarlett!
We introduced Scarlett and Sally in a neutral area, outside the enclosure. Well, Saturday was bad news. Sally pecked Scarlett repeatedly, and wouldn't...
I ended up separating them last night. My husband hastily build a makeshift enclosure with a divider between. Today, same thing. When they are let out together, Sally runs at Scarlett, pecking at her head repeatedly. Scarlett hunkers down and just takes it, doesn't even try to defend herself...
I am a new chicken owner. My husband found our "Sally" on the freeway two weeks ago on his way home from work. She was dirty, battered and terrified. We decided to keep her, and she has looked better everyday. She is looking really good now!
We were told by everyone that she shouldn't live...
