You gotta do what you gotta do. One thing I've found positive about possums though is they hunt rats and mice. I found one hunting a rat that had been hanging around my front porch steps. I feel kinda sorry for them unless they get into the coop. But then everything's locked down and...
Raccoons are notorious for pulling bird parts through wire mesh. You can come out and have all legs missing or a wing. The hawk in this case was probably just the cleanup crew.
I just put game bird netting over my almost 900 sqft run using one of these http://www.amazon.com/Best-Choice-Products%C2%AE-Netting-Poultry/dp/B001W2AG2M/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1415600047&sr=8-1&keywords=game+netting
I have a similar situation, the chicken house, a secure run, then a big...
I've gone out looking for a chicken in distress at night. I eventually figured out it was an owl. It wasn't your usual hooty hoot sound. It's another sound completely different. I believe it is something they do to stir up game.
I don't know if you have wire bottomed henhouse or a roost next to wire to the outside, but raccoons are notorious for ripping off limbs trying to pull chickens through the wire. So make sure wherever the chickens roost, there's no way for a critter to reach through.
OMG, that's so funny. Good story. Maybe Blue was startled by the raptor sound from Nugget. You know how chickens get upset at the alarm call. Well, this one must have been a doozy!
Interesting. Tapes usually appear a little lighter white or translucent white but yeah, must be tapes. Also looks like there may be something else there too. The ones that are a little longer.
I had an egg bound hen once that when I'd stand her up, she would fall on her face. Neck stretched out, just deep distress and almost completely immobilized. I helped her get an egg out and she was fine. Symptoms were sudden too. Can't say this is typical.
Have they been wormed and deloused? Do the Valbazen for worms and Ivermectin for mites, lice, etc. Broody hens don't eat too good btw. I'd treat them all though.
You might want to give her some tasty treats like bits of melon, lettuce, rice, etc. Remember, it's gotta be something SHE likes. This is not about YOU. (Just having fun with you, you know that.)
Strange they think Ivermectin is useless because Ivermectin is used for all types of mite problems on both animals and people. I think they are somehow misinformed and I've had good results with it myself (the pour on). For non blood sucking mites I may add a few drops of Frontline for cats...
