Why are grey chickens called every other color but grey?

Yes, lavender and self blue are the same thing.

    Coop location /space

Yes, a heater can be a good thing to keep in mind in case it is needed. Whether it is even an issue will depend on what breeds they choose to raise. Someone who wants any of the common standard-sized chickens with normal feathers, and who does not raise chicks in the coldest few months, will...

    Coop location /space

They can hurt themselves by running into the walls. Or they can drop straight down and hurt themselves by landing hard. When they have enough space, chickens will sort-of fly down at an angle, and that gives them a softer landing. I've had chickens in below-freezing temperatures, but with a...

    Coop location /space

I would not put roost ladders in a coop that size, just one roost that runs straight across. Don't put it too high, because you don't want them to hit a wall coming down: maybe one foot from a wall, and two or three feet up from the floor. (Edit to clarify: a foot from one wall leaves three or...

Need a non-beeping incubator for dry hatching.

You might want to get one that does not claim to have automatic humidity control. Last time I looked, there were a fair number of the cheaper incubators that didn't have it, but I can't remember how long it's been since I did look. I've had the Brinseas for a while now, and I did get them on...

    Chicks keep dying

I had wondered if the younger ones were getting left behind, or pushed away from the food, or not being kept as warm as they needed. But that doesn't match up with the ages that you actually lost.

Need a non-beeping incubator for dry hatching.

I've got a couple of Brinsea Maxi incubators (one Eco and one Advance), and I don't have trouble with either of them beeping about humidity. I don't think either of them has a humidity sensor at all. What kind of incubator do you have?

    Chicks keep dying

For the chicks that died, were they the younger ones or the older ones or some of each?

    Are they eating the dirt?

Good reminder to always read the label! There are several different medications that can be found in chicken food, and the instructions are different for different ones. I notice that you are in Scotland. I am in the USA, where the most common medication in chick starter is Amprolium, which is...

    Red sex link

I was referring to the coloring: a Red Sexlink male is supposed to be mostly white, often with some red blotches in the shoulder area, but not that nice red over most of his body. For the comb, yes frost bite would account for the smooth top instead of the usual points on it.

In that case, I don't know what to say, other than to see how it looks when it grows feathers. I'd really like to see updated pictures in a month or so :)

    Landrace/adaptive breeding discussion

I think by now, most of the hatchery Easter Eggers just come from breeding EE to EE for multiple generations. If the hatchery once gets a flock that are pure for the blue egg gene and lay well, it makes sense to just keep breeding from them. Or almost pure for the blue egg gene, given the usual...

    Red sex link

Pretty rooster! Something clearly got mixed up in the breeding pen at the hatchery, because a Red Sexlink male is not supposed to look like that! If that rooster is the father, and the mother was a Red Sexlink, then I'm not sure what caused one chick to be yellow. Do you have any other colors...

    Red sex link

It would help if you post a picture of the father, if you're trying to figure out why one chick is white. Are you sure about which chickens are the parents? No other roosters available? No other hens that could possibly have contributed eggs? Chickens can be pretty sneaky sometimes.

Are My Leghorns Close to Laying?

It is common for a chicken to take a day off every now and then. Your two might be taking turns having a day off, so sometimes they both lay and sometimes it is just one or just the other.

Considering 2 hens for urban backyard. Looking into breeds and between Buff vs. Muscovy. Thoughts?

This is the "Duck" section of the forums, and yes Muscovy is a breed of duck. For ducks or chickens, it could still be a good idea to have at least three, so if something happens to one, there are still two to keep each other company. Chicken coop designs are not usually quite right for ducks.

If it does not stink, even when you put your head inside and sniff, then it is fine. There are many levels of "cleaning." In a shallow coop like the one you pictured, it might work well to use a layer of sand, and scoop droppings each day with a kitty-litter scoop. For some people, the scooping...

Dominant and Recessive White and Other Colors "hiding"?

I don't know of anything that is exactly what you described, with just symbol/name/image, but here are several things that might help: https://kippenjungle.nl/chickencalculator.html You can change any one gene and see what the picture does. Or change several genes and see the effect of all of...

New babies but no idea of the breed or sex

I'm looking forward to seeing how they look at the grow :)

    Maybe I'm mistaken.

I don't know for sure, but it does seem likely that the barring would show on black spots.
