I read 3 to 4 hens per nesting box, i have 12 hens, so I purchased 3 boxes. Now that all the hens are laying it's been a bit busy. Today turned in a full battle. Bloody combs, squabbling, and screaming.
I fed them some canned insects to calm everyone down and then sat to watch who was causing...
Mrs. K. it could have been. I ordered 20 chicks, anticipating a good chunk of loss on day old shipped chicks. I only lost one, so I was lucky in that sense.
I had a cheap tarp, 3 large bags of ice and duct tape delivered yesterday. I'm pretty sure walmart put me on a watchlist over it. I chose 'leave at door' since I was at work, they changed it to 'this order requires a signature'. My husband put the tarp up last night. It covers about 1/3 of the...
I feel horrible. We had a hen pass this morning. Can heat stress cause a hen to pass a day after it occured?
The tarp that covers their run had ripped on Tuesday. It just disintegrated from the sun. I ordered another one, but it isn't scheduled to arrive until Saturday.
We kept icing the...
7 today. I have 13 and they just began laying a couple of weeks ago. The varying size and colors are neat to observe. I'm quite pleased, given the 100+ temps we have.
Most treats result in friendly relations.Butternut squash results in a feeding frenzy. Canned Critters Insect Blends results in a mash-up of UFC and WWF, and my legs are not exempt.
Perris shared a link on how they are raising mealworms on one of my posts. Perhaps there will be useful info for you there.

I think this is a great idea. And a very cost-effective method. That being said, any worm other than nightcrawlers for fishing give me the heebie jeebies lol. My Husband offered to handle the raising of meal worms, I passed because we get 105÷ degrees all summer, and I don't want them in the house.
A few of my girls started laying last week, all normal, but a little on the small side. I was just out when one of them wanted a snuggle. Then she laid her first egg on my foot, bit it was shellless. I don't know who was more shocked.
I made another impulse buy that bit me in the butt. A dangling parrot toy with a bell at the end. I installed it yesterday and the girls seemed very interested, as with anything new, but within 24 hours the run turned into Jurassic Park. It seems the toy has brought out the aggression. Jumping...
Jdlovesthis if it makes you feel any better, I bought my chickens a pet shade tent so they could have a safe place. The entire run is covered, not even mortar fireworks bother these girls...but yanno..just in case.
I broke the fock up and sent 6 of my girls to my Brother in Laws house. I'm both happy and slightly annoyed that they seemed to love their new home more. Their coop is under an orange tree, plenty of things to explore and bugs to eat. They're going to be so spoiled there.
