I hope so! She's been getting a bit better, the last thing we want is for her to starve herself. Any idea how often I should feed her until she's got her appetite back?
Her bumble might be starting to get smaller, based on my check of it this evening, hopefully the antibiotics manage to finish...
Will do
On that note I have a question, I found a product called critical care formula which is aimed at birds, reptiles and mammals, it consists solely of dextrose and whey protein powder
The whey is throwing me off, do you think it'd be safe to give to her? I thought it may have enough...
Could she have eaten something toxic? Or possibly drank stagnant water?
I think this is the next thing to rule out.
If she is pooping, I'd guess that it's not an impaction. Brown and runny doesn't sound abnormal
I assume it's not possible for an animal to have gotten hold of her? Is it possible...
...or feeling lethargic/tired, we often advise treating for niacin deficiency to be safe. The treatment would be warm (but not hot) soaks, supervised***, so she can get the weight off her feet. About 10 minutes or until she's tired of it per session. Most importantly we advise giving them 1 ml...
It's now 6pm here and she's still barely touched her food
She nibbled at some oats that I topped up with vitamins, and she will eat mealworms happily
Everything else is a no- even peas. She has no interest in eating her food, I'm worried about her. Should I be force feeding? This is the second...
One thing I'm concerned about is she is not eating much at all, she's lost just over 70g over the past week I think. I've been watching her very closely now she's indoors, and she's hardly touched her food at all. She will eat treats, she's been getting mealworms at the end of the day after her...
I don't see anything wrong in her feet, I think this is likely a niacin issue
I don't think we are going to get an answer on whether or not the b complex you have currently is good to give orally, so could you access the durvet brand b complex from TSC? If you can, I'd start it ASAP 1 ml per...
Our vet feels a local anaesthetic would be unwise due to ducks having a lot of nerves in their legs/feet- I don't have any elaboration on this as my partner was the one who had the conversation with him. I'm not sure if he thinks it would be less effective or something? However he did reassure...
We'll ask if it can be done with a local anaesthetic, but I suspect he will say no
We could always get a second opinion from another vet, maybe we will find someone who is willing to take the scab off- for now we will continue her antibiotics and hope for the best
We had good news from the vet today, he thinks she's improved a little bit since he first saw her and no longer thinks the x ray will be necessary. The bumble hasn't improved yet but the swelling in her leg is down slightly so the heat and swelling is more local to the bumble now-
We're going...
Is there any heat or swelling in either leg?
I'm confused as you said further up in the thread that you have durvet b complex injectable, but the photo you posted doesn't look like that brand- if you have the durvet B complex, you can give it orally
If it's another brand, I'm not sure
Cute!
I see, in that case seeing as she is so young, she is likely just feeling a bit of weight in her wings. When those flight feathers come through, they get a lot of blood in their wings as they grow in, which can cause them to droop- its very common!
I don't see any abnormal feather...
Are you certain that she is female? If you're absolutely sure, it could possibly be fixed by getting her a duck friend of the same sex. Don't get a drake as he will just terrorise her and the chickens. With company she may ignore the chickens more, but it's hard to say for certain. Either way...
It doesn't look like angel wing to me, how old is she? How long has it been like this?
To me, if she shows no sign of pain or discomfort, and it wasn't recent and sudden, if uses the wing with no issue, it seems like it may be an old injury that healed a bit off, and is causing her wing to droop...
Update: she's still not really any better. The swelling and heat persists after almost a week of antibiotics and anti inflammatory, vet wants us to bring her back for x rays and a small incision to assess/rule out internal damage from the infection, and from there we will try harsher antibiotics...
Update: she doesn't seem to be getting any worse, but that swelling and heat hasn't gone down so our vet wants us to bring her back in for x rays (radiographs can help assess tissue damage and whether the bone is being affected), we will almost certainly be moving to a stronger antibiotic...
Well I'm not familiar with this brand, we should probably check that as I can't say for certain. I know the durvet brand vit b from tractor supply is given orally- do you have access to that?
@ruthhope any idea?
It does sound like a sprain or muscle weakness from something then, vit B can only help.
Unfortunately if you put it in the water it will be very dilute and have little effect, it needs to be taken directly by the bird, you could put 1ml on a tasty treat if she will take it, many do. Otherwise...
