We trap quite a bit, and luckily we've only caught one skunk (but numerous possums and raccoons).
I use a silenced .22, place the critter in a trash bag and it's off to the burn pile we go.
Nothing gets released, with two exceptions: once I caught a squirrel, off ya go little buddy.
And I...
Why don't you like hardware cloth?
And is 10 sq feet bulls**t in the coop, the run or for freerange?
What welded wire do you use that keeps out rodents and other predators?
Thank you!!
And yeah, I found out I couldn't do meat chickens.
Steers, goats, pigs? No problem.
But when that first Orp jumped into my lap and fell asleep while I was reading a book... couldn't do it.
Many thanks for the link!
It will be on a trailer, working space 6'4"X14'.
I'm planning on a finished interior of 6X8,
Allowing for room to clean, nest boxes etc.
Ceiling will likely be a full 8 or 9 feet... our last coop was good, but difficult to clean because of the ceiling height.
I'm currently redrawing plans towards an open air coop. I'm sure the gals would survive without a fan, but would a big fan make them happier?
I work in an environment that definitely doesn't have AC, but walking into the airflow of a fan is bliss.
FYI, I'm notorious for babying my chickens...
My apologies if this has been discussed before.
I'm building a new coop in SE Texas, airflow (I'm learning) is going to be an issue.
So. 92 degrees, no wind and over 60% rh.
Does anyone use large fans to keep air moving in both an open air coop and run?
I'm considering a 3 to 4 foot diameter...
Hope this isn't considered highjacking, but I just wanted to say that your advice is much appreciated.
I'm new to BYC, but have kept up to 24 chickens...
I've learned more in the past few days than I knew in the past 15 years.
Y'all are amazing.
I've always mixed DE in the areas my freerangers used for dust baths.
I don't know if it helped, but we never had an issue with mites or lice.
Now that I'm back in the south, it's something I'll have to consider before establishing the new flock.
To be fair, I screamed like a girlscout. So the guys all came running.
I had to go back in for the gator just to save a little of my tattered pride. :barnie
I especially like the cardinal, but the funniest one was rolling under a tractor and finding a baby alligator eyeball to eyeball with me.
I caught him and released him in a nearby pond.
Gentleman asked me if I wanted to drive...
"I'm holding an alligator. How about you drive this time"? :idunno
It's finally time to get busy with building our new coop and run. I've been procrastinating for three years, my Missus is having no more of it!
We do miss our gals, and can't stand many more store bought eggs.
We have a 16' trailer to work with
and material from an old barn to help cut costs...
We had a major problem in Oregon, especially with starlings and the dreaded raccoons.
We didn't want food in the coop (tried it, ended up with a coop full of starlings), and the netting would eventually get shredded.
I'll try to find the link, but we finally settled on water nipples and a couple...

My Dad, however, was guilty of Mom's #1 pet peeve (I've never run across it since) : the dreaded "half a piece of bread".
Mom: "Would you like another piece of bread"?
Dad: "Just half a piece".
Mom: "There's no such thing" and she would cut it in half, then declare that she now had two...
