    Fly strike- when to return?

...doing chicken chores and saw that my buckeye had a particularly dirty looking bottom. I picked her up to discover that she had an abundance of maggots near her vent and the smell was atrocious. I soaked her in warm water and epsom, removed every visible maggot, trimmed all the butt feathers...

    Any other hobby entomologists here?

Carrion feeders found on (and in) a dead squirrel a couple weeks ago. Forgot about these! American carrion beetle (Necrophila americana). I think they're cute 😆 There were also individuals of another species in the Necrophila genus, which were black and orange instead of black and yellow. Not...

Dreaming of Spring Gardening in the Middle of a Wisconsin winter part 2

...doing vacation laundry) of complaints. Chief among them is her lack of cleanliness. I scoop coops every day; she clearly did not. There were maggots in two. The cat boxes were overflowing with dirty litter and reeked. The microwave had something baked onto its carousel that had to be soaked...

Few Questions On Runner Duck Drake & Sick Chicks

...my male runner duck, not exactly sure what it is fully yet other than he's got what looks like ants (not 100% sure if its ants, they aren't maggots or gnats though, I know that) on his dirty backdoor. So, I was curious, cause he isn't really bathing much and things, what can I use (soap, etc)...

    Eva’s Friends

...too often. In terms of cleanliness, I'm sure she wasn't cleaning coops every day. The Omlet's pull-out tray wasn't just dirty, there were maggots in it. Dottie's indoor kennel was filthy and the basement cats' litter boxes were overflowing with the smell coming clear up the stairs. And...

Still no idea what’s going on with my hens comb and growing black spots

There were some lice under her wings but not in this area. I did treat her for those. No maggots and no strong odor that I noticed.

Still no idea what’s going on with my hens comb and growing black spots

Is there any odor? Any maggots or lice/mites? Hard to tell. I'd treat it with the ointment like you are doing, hopefully that will heal up. I'm not sure what to make of the scabs.

My chicken suddenly had severe prolapse overnight.

Yeah, it might be the maggot thing. Her bottom was so messy yesterday, I couldn't see anything but poop. I had her separated from the others, so I know it didn't get pecked. Thanks for the info!

...will be attracted, and might pull out the intestines. They might have seen it before you let them outside. Flysrike is when flies lay maggot eggs on a wound or a poopy vent area, and the maggots hatch and eat into the skin. It can be deadly in hot weather when flies are about. Check the...

    Red/ poopy bum Rooster

...BYC Gallery according to the link below. If he's got a dark poopy butt, give him a clean up so you can inspect him more closely and make sure the tissue is intact, that there's no lice/mites and/or maggots. https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/how-to-upload-videos-to-the-gallery.1631126/

Scabbing/necrotic? tissue around rooster's vent. ***Gross images***

...mites and take care of those while making sure his butt is clean. Interestingly, I didn't see mites on any of the other chickens. Still no maggots, so I'm glad about that. I'll be applying your suggestion to the coop tomorrow to make sure it stays that way while we figure this out and get...

    Worm under surface of skin

...a knife on their chicken, even if just a tiny cut. But it doesn't cost anything and if you see it's a worm, you can remove it immediately. Maggots from fly strike wouldn't be long like that. Maggots are more like rice than long noodles. I'm of the opinion that you are seeing a vein close to...

Scabbing/necrotic? tissue around rooster's vent. ***Gross images***

I would make sure to wash any poo off his vent. Look for any maggots. If I were you I would get some permethrin ready to use spray from your feed store and spray his vent area. That should keep the flies off, and coat his scab with antibiotic ointment. Is he being pecked by other chickens around...

Hen with Sour Crop, But Not Responding To Treatment

5lbs is her weight. I only saw them once and then they were gone. I cleaned the poop off, and there were no wounds at all around her vent anywhere. If I see the larvae again, I will take photos, but so far I haven't see them again.

Hen with Sour Crop, But Not Responding To Treatment

...worm larvae in your hen's poop and attached to her rear feathers? You should not be seeing larvae on the hen's feathers, it sounds like Maggots instead of Roundworms. Gather her up, give her bottom a very good soaking in warm soapy water, clean up all the poop off of her and make sure there...

Vent gleet? Or just poor hygiene?

It's fine, you don't have to delete this one, I was just wondering if it was the same hen or if you had another one with an issue. :)

    Chicken puking green and diarrhea

That is a lot of great advice and I will keep this bookmarked should I need to refer to it again. Unfortunately, we are leaving town on vacation thats been planned for 6 months. I'm not sure what Ill do yet, but the elderly relatives that will be feeding the flock won't be able to handle any...

Vent gleet? Or just poor hygiene?

Same, but that post was before the vomiting, green discharge, and before I cleaned her up ruling out flystrike... no maggots. I can't figure out how to delete this older post.

    Chicken puking green and diarrhea

...Inspect the tissue all the way around the vent and under to make sure there are not wound and she doesn't have FlyStrike. Do you see any maggots? If the plastic pieces are very small, she may be able to expel them, it's hard to know. Do provide grit (crushed granite) free choice for your...

    Fly Strike

...water...(broody poop!). From what I can see of the wound, I think it looks good. Just keep tending to it like you have been. As long as the maggots are gone, she should heal up just fine. How long did it take the maggots to do the damage? Well, in warm weather, maggots can hatch in...
