Little late to the game, but I have a question...
Long-story short - I have two smooth-feathered chicks from a silkie pen which housed all silkie-feathered Showgirls, Silkies, and a couple frizzle/sizzles (what's the difference between a frizzle and a sizzle - is there one?)....
So, I assume...
I know I'm late to the game, it being nearly mid-September...
But I wanted to pipe in that I just picked up a gaggle of "Silkie" chicks from a breeder a couple weeks ago. I used quotations because two of my new chickies are coming in smooth-feathered. The breeder had both frizzles and showgirls...
Thanks so much!! I'll keep watching him to be sure it's a him.
(Have some younger silkie chicks, and some could be roos, too; so I may have to decide on what silkie roo I want to keep since I don't have a plethera of silkie hens)
...but his walnut comb is noticeable, whereas my blue (also pictured; same age) isn't even visible beneath her coifed poof. I see small wattles, and I *think* I see streamers in his poof, but I'm not sure.
I can't tell what his hackles or saddle feathers look like with is glaringly white silkie...
Hmmm... I saw their showgirls and they were silkie feathered... She also had frizzles... Could it have been from a sizzle? (Still get confused on the feather typing beyond normal/smooth and silkie)
Would a sizzle or frizzle 2nd gen chick that's smooth feathered be more likely to throw smooth...
I have a question...
So, I picked up some new Silkie chicks a couple weeks ago, and two of my new babies are coming in smooth feathered... Breeder said it was because she pens Showgirls with her Silkies - so I assume the smooth feathering is a throwback from the Turken influence.
I love my...
Well.... Hansel is certainly looking more and more rooster-like as the week has developed.
This is the Polish I was asking about... now 13-15 weeks old
And now my little white Silkie is appearing roo-ish with possible streamer feathers in his crest
Thoughts? He may still be too young...
Thanks so much for your help, both of you!
I have a mixed barnyard lot... 9 in total, including the one I'm 99% certain is a Roo and the Polish. Everyone is between 12-14 weeks old (got them all the same week, the Silkies were older is all I was told; though about the same size as the standard...
Would appreciate some thoughts on my Polish. Sold to me from a breeder as a "candy corn"
This girl (I hope!) is very dominant, and has pretty decently red wattles, but her v comb is very pale like her legs. Approximately 12-14 weeks old at this point.
Lovely plumage, I think! But I already have...
Polish chick approximately 5 weeks old
Gender? What coloration would s/he be considered?
Also, Silkies which are approximately 7+ weeks... any chance they're showing hints of gender? (I've had them 5 weeks, breeder said they were a few weeks old when I got them)
White - calm once you catch...
...get some pullets in the bunch!!
I'm not sure, and I'll definitely defer to you and those with more experience than me; but the other chick that is *supposed* to be a silver Lace Wyandotte and the one that's a cockerel were identical as chicks. In fact, my cockerel looked just like she does...
Hoping I might find an answer on this thread...
I'm completely new to chicken keeping and purchased a mixing of breeds assortment of straight run chicks. Wyandottes, Silkies, Sicilian Buttercup, bantam Wyandottes, EE, and this lovely Polish!
Can anyone hazard a guess to gender? I could have...
Thanks, Wishing4Wings!!!
I truly do appreciate it.
My SL (probably) roo had an odd looking comb at first, too. (As in, didn't look like the pics I saw online). Hoping the other will grow into it! Glad to hear she's likely a pullet!
I'm hoping my bantams all turn out to be pullets, too. But I...
Hey guys,
Hopefully someone's can give me some kind of idea on these guys. I'm guessing my last posts were too young. Please let me know if they're still too young.
I have my guesses, but as a first time chicken owner, I'd like to have an educated guess at least :P
Five weeks old; the Easter...
Thanks, Wishing4Wings! The majority are between 4-5 weeks, so I figured they may be too young to tell-but I've seen some "likely this or that" on 4 week olds so I figured I'd give it a shot.
I'll see if I can get better pictures this weekend, it will make them closer to 5 and 6 weeks of age. I...
Going to try these pics as they are more individualized and better quality, if still fuzzy (chicks are fast!)... leaving out the bantams (GLWs and Silkies) as I'm sure I won't know for a while longer since it sounds like they're exceedingly difficult to sex.
Cockerel or pullet? Four weeks old +...
Hey guys,
I'm new to BYC, and really any forum, so please tell me if I'm supposed to make my own post or if I can add my questions to this post :)
I have a starter flock for my backyard, and I'm curious as to whether or not I've ended up with all hens or how many roosters I may have.... I...
