Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

My chocolate orpington has been going broody on and off since March. She's been in broody jail 3 times so far. I finally decided to let her sit some eggs since she was so desperate to be a mama. Luckily we have a roo so giving her eggs to hatch was no problem. She had 7 but kicked one out, now...

    Best Egg Layers

You just have to keep an eye on hatcheries. A lot of them are coming to the end of their season because the cold weather is starting. You could always buy yourself some hatching eggs on ebay and hatch them yourself.

Who else is waiting for that first egg?

The EE is my middle son's chicken and he really wants her to lay pink. We'll have to see! Luckily I can get eggs from the farm next door for $2 a dozen but yeah it'd be nice to not have to buy them anymore.

Who else is waiting for that first egg?

We have 2 hens out of 6 laying right now. One's been laying for a while and one just started. Waiting for the EE to start laying, I can't wait to see what color her eggs are.

4 Year Old Son vs. Roosters

We have a rooster and I have a 7 year old, a 5 year old and a 2 year old. The rooster so far has been a good boy, but I don't let the kids in the chicken run very often. The other day I did and he started crowing at me after they left, he wasn't impressed. He hasn't shown any aggression yet...

Lavender Orpington Pullet or Roo Please

Our male LO just started crowing, he's 12 weeks old. He's not terribly vocal though, just crows at the dogs if they get too near the coop.

Lavender Orpington Pullet or Roo Please

Yep if that's a 5 week old bird, it's male. Females don't look like that until they are closer to 10 weeks.

    Orpington Roo or not?

That actually looks like a female to me.

How can I tell what sex my 6 week old chicks are?

Yep #2 looks like a cockerel too.

What treat did your chickies get today?

Cooked meat is good for chickens, it's high in protein. Chicken is no exception even though it seems wrong.

Putting chicks in the new coop.

We have a secure run and I locked them in the coop for a few weeks at night, then I stopped locking them in at night. They get in there when it's dark now on their own. The first couple of nights though I had to physically either pick them up and put them in there or bribe them in with...

Things i never knew about chickens...

Yeah people don't normally think of chickens as predators, but it would suck to be a mouse who accidentally gets into a chicken run.

How to keep ground maintenance in a chicken run

So far nothing stinks in my run, I have 7 chickens and they've been out there for a couple of months. Seems like it all just biodegrades. I know some people that throw the old coop bedding out in the run, I don't. I put the old coop bedding in a compost pile.
