Hmmm strange. They never roost on the floor and have 2x4's for roosts, and very deep litter. We had 4 toms so I thought maybe it had to do with that and their bickering.
Good info! Thank you!
We butchered our very first turkey today. And something I've never seen in any pics OR from a store bought turkey is this bone sticking out of his breast. Can anybody tell me what or why? He was healthy and active. Always a good eater. Wasn't noticeable until the feathers came off.
I actually just went out and looked again this morning and they have much bluer heads and are definitely all toms. Sigh. I was excited for eggs soon.
Turkey dinner anyone?
We are new to this, but these guys are 10 months old and we were sure it was 2 hens and 2 toms. But their showy behaviour lately and what appears to be fighting....makes us question if they are all toms!! According to everything we've read anyway. I'm 100% the one on the right is a tom, the...
...I don't THINK anything can get in there.
It actually bit one of my turkeys as well but musta been too much of a fight. They are also now in a new den. First time our turkeys have ever been easily moved. Like they knew we were saving them from being eaten alive. Poor guys.

We started with 10 chickens (4 were hens and 6 were Roos). Last week we culled 2 white silkie Roos because they were very aggressive...and we picked up 12 more hens. So now we have 16 hens and 4 Roos. They are sharing a coop but are still separated by fencing so we can introduce slowly. I had no...
We have tons of space. Maybe that's what we should try. I wouldn't mind breeding him because like I said he's massive and gorgeous. He's not aggressive at all towards us.
If I had my way, I would have a little coop and run for every breed I love. Lol but I think hubby is getting more...
We have a buff orpington roo that is very quiet. He NEVER goes outside. And so I thought this weekend I would sit for hours on end waiting to see why. I assumed he was being pecked on and maybe was bottom of the pecking order. My heart went out to the poor guy. Like he was the victim of bullying...
Lol! I know it's quite noisy but they seem to get along fine so far. Still young though! We are picking up 9 more hens on Sunday. But still....yikes. We'll be watching that's for sure!
Yeah the loving part I'm beginning to understand. We still haven't gotten to the point where we are overcrowded. But we also haven't come to a time that we are ready to kill one either. And I can't really picture it happening. We have 6 Roos living peacefully (now) with 4 hens...
Why doni see so many people selling laying hens and roosters on sites like kijiji? I'm a noob so maybe I will some day too but....usually the reason is "downsizing". But it makes me wonder, if you're downsizing, wouldn't you feed your family with them instead?
Well, the verdict came in yesterday when my very boyishly looking hen laid an egg! I almost had to wrestle with her to get it out from under her. Took some coaxing with blueberries, but at least now I know!
Lol ok! He's just a quiet and antisocial boy I guess. He's my favorite one. Boy though, we ended up with 6 Roos out of 10 chicks. Both white silkies are Roos....which kinda means they are a bit useless as I've heard they aren't great meat birds, so no eggs or meat? Blah. They are so pretty...
I have a buff orpington 23 weeks old. I'm new so I don't know how to sex chickens....but it can tell what all of mine are except this one just by behaviours. And well....the dead give away of the crowing! But this one boggles me. Lately it has been laying around almost like I read how they start...
