I don't have an incubator, but hope to hatch a couple ducklings.

don't stress about the viability of the egg. I've taken store bought fertile eggs, that were refrigerated, and put them under a broody and they hatched. Not 100% but I blamed that on the refrigeration. I would suggest what others have: buy a cheap incubator, borrow one, or find a friend that...

How long to wait to provide day olds

Hi Everyone, So a hen is broody for the second time this season. She is a great hen and accepts day old chicks to raise that I get for her., about 3 times in the past. It's October and she is now broody again. It's been about a week. When can I introduce the day olds? Should I wait at least two...

Trader Joe Eggs. 9 of 11 viable!

If you have a local "natural food store" they may sell fertile eggs. Many people will buy them and incubate. Even fertile eggs that have been refrigerated will hatch, though the hatch rate will be a bit lower. Bring the eggs to room temp for a day before you put into the bator.

    How often to clean coop?

I muck out my coop daily and put in fresh shavings. 17 chickens.

Need your opinion: what should every coop have?

A pop door that can be opened or closed from either the inside or the outside. I have a 10x16 shed converted into a coop. Inside it's divided in half with chickens on one side and feed/storage on the other side. I muck out the coop every morning once the chickens go out to the enclosed run...

Thanks for the replies. I guess the name Imp is either sex! I'm just curious why no roo behaviour? Or maybe he saw that the last roo, went to live in the town next door last month! At least the girls don't dislike him. :-)

    Sumatra Thread!

Hello Sumatra folks, Here is my Sumatra. Today 20 weeks old. I have been calling her a her because of the lack of roo behaviour. Absolutely not interested in any of the hens, and I have not heard a peep or any attempt at crowing. My friend saw this bird this past weekend and says it's a...

    Sad . . . she's broody again.

After 4 hatches this summer I love my broodies. Though I feel your pain as far as missing the eggs. I did read a good anti broody option on byc the other day. Freeze some eggs, put them under your broody. Change to new frozen eggs every few hours. I'm trying this option next time.
