Last night when I was taking care of my stock, I noticed one of my breeding toms was laying down, unusual for mating season. I went in his tractor, and he stood up when I touched him. He seemed a tad lethargic, but nothing extreme. He wasn’t strutting at all, which concerned me a bit, and he...
That’s what I was thinking, too. I looked all around his pen to see if there was anywhere obvious where he could have stuck his head through, or if there was any dried blood. Nothing jumped out at me. I do have some free range chickens that he’s pretty aggressive toward that like to hang out...
One of my toms has these scabs on his wattle. He is the only tom in an enclosure with four hens. All the birds appear to be acting normally and do not appear sick.
Any ideas?
As an update, I went outside and cracked open the egg. There was no unusual smell or anything. Just a beautiful, dead turkey poult who had not quite absorbed his yolk sac. He was quite large, though. As I opened the egg, it looked like there was almost no room for an air cell.
I’m hatching out some turkey eggs. They’re not due till Saturday, but a couple have already hatched.
This little guy pipped last night, and has obviously died. No movement, no breathing. Just his egg tooth sticking out of the shell.
Oddly, though. Some sort of liquid leaked out of the pip and...
On closer inspection it looks like that eye has sort of a film on it and it’s starting to get sort of cloudy. This picture shows the size difference better. I removed the normal poults and he’s now in the incubator by himself.
Thank you for the responses. It looks like there is something in its eye, maybe a piece of egg membrane or something. Is it possible that eye is that swollen from being irritated?
I’ve got five adult Narragansett turkeys in a chicken (now turkey?) tractor. I’ve been using traditional hanging bell waterers for many months, but the turkeys are so big they tend to knock the waterers around and slosh the water out rather quickly.
Yesterday, I moved them into a taller tractor...
Thank you very much for the reply!
That’s what I was thinking, but I was having a case of the newbie jitters and wanted to make sure.
I’ll definitely be splitting them up soon. Within the next week, actually. I have a third tom in another tractor. I’m planning to butcher one of the three toms...
I have two Narragansett toms in a tractor with a few hens. Today when I came home from work, I saw that their waterer had come apart. I have no idea how long they were without water. I give them fresh water twice each day.
Both toms’ heads were bright red, and their snoods were very engorged...
So I have some Narragansett turkeys that are almost three months old. One of them is not as as active as the others over the past few days. It is mostly just standing still with its head tucked in like a vulture, bobbing its head and tensing its neck muscles. It almost looks like it is trying to...
