I hatched out my first few turkeys. One of them has a very swollen eye. Any ideas?

It may be due to genetics (parents too closely related) or it may be due to disease. I would cull it immediately and wash your hands thoroughly before touching any of the other poults just in case it is a communicable disease.

Thank you for the responses. It looks like there is something in its eye, maybe a piece of egg membrane or something. Is it possible that eye is that swollen from being irritated?

On closer inspection it looks like that eye has sort of a film on it and it’s starting to get sort of cloudy. This picture shows the size difference better. I removed the normal poults and he’s now in the incubator by himself.

The film that you are seeing is probably the nictitating membrane. All birds have a nictitating membrane.

He’s keeping it closed more and more, and it appears to be causing him discomfort. Cull?

He’s culled. Thank you so much for your advice. I have a lot more eggs in another incubator. Hopefully whatever it was, it wasn’t genetic.
