@southernhusky
I'm so sorry I didn't see your messages last year! I didn't mean to drop out on you like that! I got 9 chicks on my first hat, and about 20 on the following hatch!(was so surprised by that)
Anyway this winter I had a fox (I saw him, so I am certain) kill 20 chickens mid...
Hahaha!
Actually, my husband is the one that's really struggling with this. Lol. Every time Kellogg crows from within his lonely coop my DH says "aw, poor guy, we should put them in their run and let him out"
"no way! This is his fault, not Elmyras! " lol
The hens seem worried about...
OK, he's been incarcerated. I feel pretty bad for him. Elmyras head looks worse today though so needed to be done. As it goes his digs are pretty good for the big house.. (well, it's actually the little house lol)
We'll I tried to make a sun bonnet. She wouldn't have it! Lol I also wonder abou Making a saddle with a Dracula like collar. Maybe would protect her head? Or just give him a handle!
Why does isolating him for a month make a difference? Wouldn't isolating her until she heals up give him time to know the others and spread the love a bit?
I do have another coop. I suppose he deserves it more than she does! Lol
I have 3 four year old hens (one of which is Elmyra) and 7 new chickens that I hatched last fall. (6 hens and a rooster) so that's 10 hens and one rooster total. The new ones are starting to lay and Kellogg loves Elmyra the most. (she squats at the drop if a hat, always has! Lol)
When I...
There is something about Elmyra according to our new rooster Kellogg who recently came of age.
He's really fairly gentle but she is missing more and more feathers on the back of her head. Her saddle feathers are fine so an apron won't help.
Anyone ever try a bonnet? I was thinking about...
Sorry if this question has been asked. I can't find the answers anywhere, but could be just be me! Lol I hatched 18 chicks Thursday and went and bought 6 guineas Saturday for predator alerts. I've never had guineas but raised 4 batches of chicks. I want them to grow up together so maybe they...
Thanks all!
I opened it up and sadly it was dead. I believe it bled out. Everything was coagulated gooey and still. So sad, but glad to move on to the chicks that are still hatching in there!
Day 23!
Huh. Still no movement. Do you think it's dead? How long do I leave it in the Bator with my live chicks and eggs? I still have lots of pipping going on.
Leslie
My chicks have been popping like popcorn over the last 24 hrs. This egg pipped and zipped pretty quickly, but now it's got blood on it and it's not moving that I can see.
This is my third hatch, and never had anything like this happen.
Can they bleed out while hatching?
Thank you! I also should have specified that I have a separate brooding area in my coop, so I was thinking of putting the keets with the chicks, but the adults will not be able to get to them until I let them out in about a month.
So perhaps I'll get the guineas this weekend, then put the...
Thank you! I need to update my coop photo. I now have a full 12x8 shed for a coop for a larger flock. I actually do intend to let the guineas do what they would like as far as night roosting but plan too keep them in the run for the first month to establish home. (mostly am getting them for...
I'm going to get some chicken eggs to incubate this week and thought I would get some guinea fowl too. Will the guineas grow up too fast for the chickens and pick on them? I certainly want them to grow up with the chickens so they are used to them. I would like to house them together.
I was...
Oooooo. That's a great idea! Thank you! Yknow, I've been thinking about electric plugs with a remote that I saw at Costco. I may try that! Lol
I'm not trying to be lazy, but I have a disease that causes muscle weakness. Usually afternoons I'm at my best and so is the weather. So it's then...
