I put up DVDs on hay bailing twine about 5 ft. apart in front of the coup and run and have not lost another chicken. It has worked for over a year now.
I have a security light beside my run. I strung twine from my security light pole to my house in 3 different directions between the run and my house. That was the area where the hawks were swooping down and grabbing my guineas. I have not seen them since this was done 6 months ago. Hawks...
You can give them tomatoes, watermelon, leafy greens, lettuce, any kind of fruit and even scrambled eggs but never pizza. They absolutely love tomatoes and strawberries.
We had 2 foxes and I killed both. They would show around 9-10 in the morning and I kept a watch and blasted them with my shotgun. We had a duck that stayed in the run at night but I let her out during the day and one of the foxes got her. But they were never able to get into the run because...
Big dogs such as labs no, lapdogs yes. I have 2 miniature schnauzers and they don't bother the chickens. They and the chicken alike walk around and don't pay each other any attention.
Tie a bunch of DVDs to strong string such as bailing twine about 4 feet apart. Tie each one on with a short piece of string so they will spin. Hang them up beside and across from your chicken pen. The array of colors emitted in the sun light makes the hawks stay away. My thinking is it...
I have a security light beside my run and it does not bother the chickens. Besides it is a good thing to have to ward off predators because they do not like to expose themselves. They prefer to do their raids in the dark.
The drake will kill the ducklings but not to eat them. He does not recognize them as his flock and he considers them a threat so kills them to protect his domain.
I snake proofed my coup by covering the cage wire with wildlife netting. If snakes try to penetrate it they get caught in it and can't back out and I can kill them. I also poured a concrete apron around the coup to stop snakes from slithering under, and prevent varmint from digging in.
I had 2 roosters a duck and 3 guineas in the yard outside my run. A fox got the 2 roosters and the duck. I tried trapping but all I got was raccoons and possums. So we started watching and the fox was showing up around 9-10 every morning. It would circle the run trying to get into the...
You did not state how many chickens you want. Most of the coops at TSC come from China so need I say more. If you want a real coop get some plans and go to the home improvement store and get the lumber, siding and roof. You can get the cage wire from TSC. I built a 6 x 8 walk in for $600 and...
I doubt it was a fox because one came and caught a rooster and a duck and carried them off to their den. I saw it with the rooster in its mouth. I shot at it from a distance and it dropped the rooster and ran, and the rooster was shook up but OK and doing well. The fox showed up each day...
Foxes are mostly nocturnal but one showed up more than once between 9 and 10. I have not seen one past that time. After I learned its time frame I was able to keep watch and kill it. I had set out cage traps but caught raccoons and possums.
