Bob Blosl's Heritage Large Fowl Thread

Question, Bob... why medicated? I raised well over 200 chicks on the non-medicated and didn't see any difference vs a few I had raised on medicated. Shouldn't breeding strong birds not succeptable(sp?) to things such as cocciodosis be part of the breeding program?

The Heritage Rhode Island Red Site

NYReds.. quick question re:confirmation on the RC RIR Cock pictured... Would he be considered a bit short in body, needing some length front to back? (Just curious, for my own knowledge) He is gorgeous. Sorry to hear of his passing Thea.

I raised chicks on anything from a 18% protein to a 30% protien. I found they seemed to do best right about 22-24%. Now, these were NOT Dorkings, I haven't raised out any of them yet, but I hatched and raised several hundred mixed breeds last season so its just based on my one seasons worth of...

Fingers crossed for you K!!!! And I LOVE the pic of the bench thieves Here's a bit better pic of the Dorks from above. A little bit of taper, but I can work with that. The cock is STOUT. If I could ever snatch him up, I plan on getting him weighed. Need to delouse them one more time and that...

    B.Y.C. Dorking Club!

Actually no I hadn't as its not really feasible for me. Between the dairy, the beef herd and the sizable garden I've got my hands full and wouldn't be able to (or remember for that matter!) to check on them enough to make it worthwhile...and it takes away from foraging time, and doing some...

Thanks Joseph. I really like these birds, and also think they'll be a good starting place for me. They do all need to bulk up, coming off moult, long confinement and several lice attacks (a never ending problem here, ugh!) took thier toll, unfortunately. I wish I had another cock bird. He is...

Yellow... wow. Just..WOW! The pic REALLY helps see what a Dorking should look like.. thank you for posting that. It says more there, then just reading a description in the SOP. Here's a couple pictures of the Red quad I have. I couldn't get a pic of them seperately standing relaxed...they...

    YO GEORGIANS! :)

Hey Fellow Georgians! FYI...it seems ILT is running seriously rampant in my area of the state, in the commercial poultry farms. Please be careful and practice good biosecurity!!! I just was told 90% of the houses in my area are infected

    MG Certified hatcheries/breeders?

Wow, my computer crashes and yall took off! I'm glad to see continued dialog on this. I'm still puttrring around with the 6 birds that have been on quarantine since before the infection took place. I'm still very up in the air with how to continue things. These poor birds haven't been able to...

Thanks YHF but I meant are we looking for a nice open V when viewing from the back? Or a more moderate V? Sorry I wasn't more clear in my previous post.

    B.Y.C. Dorking Club!

Hello fellow Dork folks Hope yall are all doing well. Our harddrive took a nosedive last week so I'm checking in via phone. Had a question in regards to the body shape of the dorks. My SOP is missing so I'm askin here. They should have the nice cinderblock shape, that part I get. But I...

Quote: you can do that, but use buttermilk, as its cultured and has some good bacteria stuffs in it. ( I meant adding to raw milk) I don't think you can jump start the store bought regular milk... but I don't know for sure. I've got an unlimited supply of the raw stuff grazing in the pasture...

Quote: ok i got horribly ill once on soured milk... you sure it's ok to give chickens? as in grocery milk with lumps in it ?? don't want to hurt the chickies but sure would be less of a waste. Not soured pasteurized milk.. thats bad stuff, as it has none of the good bacteria to culture...
