Our layers are all named after a type of food: Chicken _________. We have Strip, Patty, Nugget, Fried Steak, Wing, Cordon Bleu, and Noodle Soup. The meat birds are all named: Dinner.
Before you go to all that expense think about a skylight. A Solatube or similar skylight would be much easier and cheaper than a solar panel, inverter, wiring, permit, installation.
Well I scrapped the old coop and run. Decided to start from scratch (hee hee). That's what happens when you hang out here.
Anyway. Built a new coop, could be used later for a shed.
It's 6x6 with 8' ceilings. Fully wired and insulated. Has a commercial vinyl floor and OSB/FRP walls...
I have been perusing the home built feeders and waterers for some time and have built my own.
I wanted to share what I used and some simple pictures.

Our in city chicken limit is 4 so I have exactly as many chickens as your car has tires, 4 and a spare. If someone asks you how many tires does you car have, what do you say? You say 4, then perhaps you say, oh and a spare. Well that's what I tell people.
Now all you need to do is tie a good strong rope to the cage, throw it in the pond before work and fish it out when you get home. Coonzilla won't bother anyone anymore.

Just drag it on the 4x4. Your yard won't suffer that much. Grass grows back. If you are super worried, get some fence posts that are wider than the coop and use them as a rolling road with some helpers. Coop will roll on top of the fence posts and your helpers will shuffle from the back...
