Very interesting. Thanks for the insight.
I have another question. The breed standard says "preferably no shank showing" and "Shank: short; in large part hidden in side feathers" this seems odd and contradictory to what I see in the Biels* I have and the photos I have seen here.
Yes but do y'all actually weight them and always go by that minimum weight? What size does 60g fall under? I don't really think in grams so I can't picture how large that is? Large? jumbo? If you have a well conformin hen who consistently lays 50g eggs, would you disqualify her from your...
So in reading the standard it says minimum hatching egg weight is 60g. I'm wondering is this something people are adhering to?
Red banks, thanks for the link! It helped quite a bit
Yes! It has been wonderful! I have two new chicks that have been stuck inside till they feather more but the last few days have been so hot I've almost considered turning on the air conditioner! So my babies have enjoyed outside time!
I will definitely check that out! Maybe the pictures along...
Been away from the site for a while and not that the holiday is passed I've come back.
The splash is Yeti and the Biel cockerel is Titus 2. They're so much bigger now but they're outside in the Meatie Run so pictures will have to wait.
Can anyone link to an article that explains how to understand a breed standard. I was excited that agree fire has posted a translation of the Biel standard but even reading it in English, so much of it doesn't make sense. I tried googling for articles explaining "chicken body types" and "chicken...
I was looking for an explanation of the terms used in breed standards (I.e. Triangular body type? What does that mean?) and found this list. Can anyone tell me with certainty... These are the ONLY colors you can show for a Cochin? So my penciled and splash hens wouldn't be admissible as cochins...
They're so irresistable! Titus is pretty at ease and fell asleep perched on my arm really quickly but the Cochin is much more cautious of me. I think her name is gonna be Yeti bug until I'm sure she's a girl and staying in not gonna commit to a name.
Understood. My intention wasn't to take to focus away from the Cochin breed. Just curious how her traits would pass on if cross bred.
My Cochin is wonderful. She was given to me by s friend with a mixed flock that didn't want her broodiness although she's not shown the slightest sign of being...
I'll have to do that =] thanks
I was just thinking that. Last go round I put them in my bath tub once they outgrew the small brooder. I may end up divorced if I do that again lol gonna have to buy a much much larger Tupperware I think
Thanks I'm still kind of surprised at how much bigger the Cochin chick is that him since they're supposed to be the same age and seem to be feathers about the same
