    Eating Egg Storage

I hope this is the right place to put this, I couldn’t find anywhere that it really fitted. How on earth do people store and keep track of the eggs? It’s the very beginning (barely) of the laying season in the UK and not all of them are laying yet but that is still 5-6 eggs per day. The eggs...

Jelly egg and tiny lash egg?

They get a layers mash with virtually unlimited access (feeder refilled to top daily). I can look at the composition of the mash but it is the stuff they feed indoor barn hens as a complete diet, it contains grains, oyster shell and fish meal but I can’t remember what else or in what...

Jelly egg and tiny lash egg?

Hi, I have been finding a lot of broken eggs in my chicken house recently. As well as getting some eggs with thin, papery or jelly shells. There are some older (3-4 year old) warren (uk term for hybrid intensive layer breed) hens in the group. Tonight I found an unbroken jelly egg with what...

    Feeding Eggs

Sorry I don’t know the exact answer to your question. I don’t think dogs can be fed egg as the main basis of their diet as it does not have the same nutrients as meat, that being said, it could probably be rotated in regularly. It sounds like you would make the food in batches, am I correct? If...

    When to stop turning?

I think its head may have been in a strange position. From the angle of this picture the comb is facing towards the camera and the underside of its chin facing the wall. Don’t have much hope left for the other two now unfortunately, also, not quite sure how to clean the stinky goo that has...

    When to stop turning?

This morning it had goo oozing from the pores on the surface.:( I have removed the shell so now it is a gooey wobbly lump. Any ideas what went wrong from these pictures?

    When to stop turning?

Just candled it. Unfortunately I only have a phone torch which is not great for super thick maran eggs. This is all the same egg. Feathers seem to be visible in one place and I can still see the air sac thought I couldn’t last night. Any thoughts?

    When to stop turning?

All nesting boxes were emptied and treated, all perches and the inside edges of the house as well as the outside. I believe they were northern fowl mites rather than red mites. They were very large and ran quite fast, they also didn’t cluster the way red mites do. So far, I haven’t actually seen...

    When to stop turning?

Thank you for helping. The hen was treated with a powder that I think is lemon eucalyptus based, she has shaken the majority of it off but there is still a coating on her skin and deep in her feathers. The chick was responding when tapped or squeaked too but has now stopped moving entirely...

    When to stop turning?

One was squeaking back when they egg was lightly tapped yesterday and is squeaking by itself today so I am thinking it has internally pipped and will hatch very soon. The other two are questionable, one is still dark but the contents now turn as the egg is tuned on the candler so is probably...

    When to stop turning?

Thank you. I have stopped the turner, at least two of them are rocking but not sure about the third one. They respond to being spoken to, it’s as close as an egg will ever get to being cute! Hopefully they hatch over the next few days.

    When to stop turning?

Hi, I had a hen on eggs who got mites and I decided it was in her best interest to take the eggs away and stop her (or try to) being broody so that she could recover from the mites and the chicks would not be infected. The eggs were put in the incubator three and a bit days ago, four out of...

Mites on broody hen! Panicking slightly!

Thank you so much! Checking the other chickens and the houses for mites this evening and potentially treating them all with powder, I think I will put powder in the nesting box around the broody hen and buy some Dergall to put on her. I am quite concerned that she will be trapped in there with...

Mites on broody hen! Panicking slightly!

Also, will these mites infest other species? I don’t think they are red mites as they are quite large and brown. I am not quite sure how to remove the hen from the nest box without getting absolutely coated in mites, as I only reached underneath her for a moment and my arm was coated in the things.

Mites on broody hen! Panicking slightly!

Thank you for your response. Would I also remove the mite infested bedding or just treat it? There are two coops and the other chickens almost always cram themselves into the other one! They are made of recycled plastic and are designed to prevent mites (or make them easier to treat) they have...

Mites on broody hen! Panicking slightly!

Thank you for responding. The vet has been contacted but unfortunately the one with chicken knowledge is not there at the moment. I will look at the permethrin, my concern is if it will be ok for the developing eggs, though I think I would be able to get hold of some quicker than any other...

Mites on broody hen! Panicking slightly!

I recently posted a question about what to do with a flighty broody hen (will the others attack her chicks if she’s left with the flock). I have just gone to check on her today after avoiding going near her so far. I went to candle one egg and instead pulled back a hand covered with mites...

    Really flighty broody hen

Hi. I have a black maran hen who has gone broody. She is sitting on her eggs in a nest box of one of the two houses, this house is only used for egg laying and the other chickens generally don’t use it. She is now somewhere around day 14 (possibly further). I am concerned that when the chicks...

    Feeding Eggs

Any eggs that float are removed. The eggs are old ones that are technically edible but of an age where it is safest to cook them thoroughly, nobody here likes completely hard boiled eggs but the animals don’t care!

    Feeding Eggs

Thanks for all the responses! They have been thoroughly boiled and are currently cooling, I will mash them up when they have cooled and see what the chickens think!
