    Animals are NOT Humans

The point in the original posting I would like to address is that predators are not inclined to the same reasoning as humans, and so we cannot take it personally if the 'do what they do'. This is a personal subject for me. We live in a subdivision in a town that has no leash laws for dogs...

    Lip Balm?

Okay, I figure that this is the place I will find the most fanatical lovers of all things chicken. I have to ask, for although I love this new adventure, I would not personally go this far... Do any of you use "Chicken Poop" Lip Balm? It's available here...

Do not turn eggs??? What do you think???

I found this interesting since when I was a kid and hatched eggs for the science fair I did not turn them at all. We only put 3 eggs in and all three hatched. Not a good sample scientifically but, there you go.

    Update, Question (A duck? To-DAY!?)

OKay, he's out and there's no visible blood, but the umb cord seems to be attached and there is somewhat yolky membrane all over his back. He's very strong and active, seems to be annoyed by the stuff. Is that normal? Should I wait and bathe it off later?

    Update, Question (A duck? To-DAY!?)

Well after our chicks hatched in the bator with 2 duck eggs that weren't due for another week, I had pretty much written them off, since I heard bacteria from the hatch can invade the eggs. Also the woman I got these from has never had a duck hatch they are all DIS. I just went to turn them...

Anyone Here Had Luck With Building Their Own Simple Incubator????

!My hubby built a wooden bator, 2ft wide and tall by 1 and a half deep. The front wall is plexiglass, and he drilled a hole in the back to run a cord into a lighbulb socket mounted on the back wall. The top is hinged, there are three drill holes in the sides for air flow. The bulb is a CLEAR...

Help! Day 19 and I cant get the humidity past 40%

I had a problem with humidity, and my hubby went to the Dollar store and got two of those cheapie giant yellow car washing sponges. I put them in and my humidity hit 78% in the hour. I also have put a warm mist humidifier next to the bator when I have the AC running to compensate for the dry...

    Success!!!

Update: This morning when we woke up we had one more chick.. This was the one that had been singing so strongly when I zipped him last night. The other had made no progress and was very still. I was so worried! I reached in and just squeezed a little where the shell was removed and felt a...

    please help me sleep tonight

Okay, any of the mommies of humans here ever have braxton-hicks (false labor)? My first baby I was sure for a week I was in labor. All false alarms. I've decided that's what watching chicks hatch is like.

    Success!!!

Thank you all so much! This board has been a true life saver. I did lose a chick (the first one) that was upside down. It cracked the egg but never got a hole. After almost a whole day with no progress I tried to intervene but it died. It seems oversized. I mean after it was gone, I...

    Humidity staying at 70.

I am by no means an expert, but: I had humidity down around 66-68% and lost a chick who's membrane was tough ad dry and papery. I have the humidity up to 72% since yesterday when that chick started having trouble, now I have two more pip holes and I can clearly see a difference in the...

    I have a pip

Congrats! It is hard to wait. I have two more cracked and two with pip holes and one of those keeps sticking the tip of his beak out and chirping! My son, who was teasing me with my husband yesterday: "Honey, I could build you a bigger incubator...one you could get in there with them."...

    HELP ASAP!

Terrible news . It turns out that he wasn't pushing with his head, it was his butt. When I finally went back to ermove some more shell, membrane started coming with it and I could see that he was head down, where I probably drowned him with moisture. This was my very first egg, so I steeled...
