We use sand inside the coop. It is easy to scoop the poop with the kitty litter scoop. Also, you should put the sand on the poop board ,at least an inch deep, to make that an easier clean up area also.
I also have one with a feather problem, and she is the sweetest chicken I have. We named her wings because she was white with beautiful golden feathers on her wings. After she turned one year old she was either plicked or mite infected and no matter what I do her feathers have'nt grown back...
