When to Seperate the Chicks from the Mother

Thanks to all for the comments. My question was more directed at removing the hens without any addtional heat source or other mommy things provided by the mother at birth. The cold nights would be an issue with early born chicks. The first hatch is three weeks old, not feathered out totally yet.

When to Seperate the Chicks from the Mother

Hello All, This is the first time that I've actually had chicks hatched by a broody hen. I set two different hens in the same run and now have issues with both hens trying to attach each other and peck at each others chicks. The hens hatched one week apart, they are currently separated within...

    Cleaning Eggs

Wash the poopy off your eggs. If your customers are buying more eggs than they need, advise them that fresh eggs is what your all about and not buy more than they can consume in a short amount of time. I wash every egg that is laid. Makes no sense to me to sell anything less than clean eggs.

    cracked egg shells in nest

Quote: Mine love it too, we tried hay and they kick it all out and refuse to lay in the nest boxes. Interesting. If mine would use litter I wouldn't have to keep replacing it as much. Your right Red, they kick it out. I think I spoiled mine early with hay then there was no turning back. Guess...

    cracked egg shells in nest

I believe I'd hang around when you have time and watch how they are being cracked. The carpet idea sounds like a good one to me.

    Dirty egg help

I use a scotch bright pad, the kind you buy at the dollar store that's afixed to a sponge. Works great, but I'd caution on using the correct washing procedure, water temp. and that sort of thing. Far as the mud goes, add more straw.

    Home Made Bator Pics

Wish I had more candling knowledge but as far as I can tell here's the status on my 20 eggs. I'm at day 14 and after candling tonight, I see what appears to be 3 clear eggs and one that I'm not sure about because it does seem to be developed more than day 7 but no quite at the level as the...

Ummm...yeah... We decided to build an incubator

Quote: I've been looking for a hatcher solution, this may be it. I would assume the bulb stays on all the time? What's been your experience with it so far? The idea sounds appealing with the wide temp. swings you get with a hot water thermostat.

Ummm...yeah... We decided to build an incubator

This cooler is only 12x14x12 inches. It was the only styro foam cooler that walmart had at the time. All the components are in the bottom. I have the same set up as rooster red illustrated, just arranged a bit differently. I set 19 eggs....

    cracked egg shells in nest

Do what you want, it’s all good advise, but what kind of nest boxes do you have? Some hens do stand up to lay; the drop will most certainly crack an egg. What kind of nest arrangement do you have? If a hen cracks an egg while laying, guess what? Yeah, it’s eaten; a hen most certainly considers...

    Bedding-

Quote: See my door and the chicken door is higher than the outside ground and the floor of the coop - so you step over or up and over going either way.... we have at least 8 inches of space/step up and we're not anywhere near not being able to open the door. If your coop is big enough...

Quote: I tried the deep litter method. Not trying to be a smarty but all it meant was more dirty litter and not being able to open the coop door. The sand option sounds good but too much work up front for me. I have found that whatever is used it has to intially be deep enough to insalate from...

    Bedding-

Yes, wouldn't recomend using hay at all. The staw tends to hang around. It may be a issue cleaning out later on but I'm willing to take a chance. Once a chicken has mud on their feathers its a bad thing.....especially in cold weather and my roosters don't have any mercy on the hens. It working...

I had the same issue with an outside run. I have a 10x20 that just got muddy to the point of no return. I tried several things and the mud just worked its way back through. Finally I made up my mind to put enough straw down to cover the mud, do whatever it took to build it up high enough, it...

    Home Made Bator Pics

Guess my next project may be building a home made candler. These pictures were taken holding a mini mag light with the egg in my hand. I tried looking thru the top but I didn't see any viens. The camera actually picked up the dot, all I could see was a large dark mass inside compared to the...
