Hi,
I have a 7 year old buff orpington who has gone broody the last 5 years. The first year or two I broke her of it, 2 years ago I got day old chicks for her to adopt, and last year I got hatching eggs. This year we have a rooster and I was excited for her to go broody and hatch some of our own...
I have 5 chicks, 7 hens in an enclosed run. I do not count at night. They put themselves to bed and unless it's winter, I just leave the door to the coop open for them. That way they can get up early without my having to get them up. I might count if I was free ranging...
The 4 week olds are in a brooder box in an unheated shed. I am almost done with the expansion of the run and a 2nd coop. The run is U shaped (with my garden in the middle) with the original coop in one corner of the U and a new coop in the other corner. When I finish the coop/run (hopefully...
Yes, the 1 egg the leghorn laid was under her, and the 2 golf balls we had to remind them what the nest boxes were for😉. I have since removed the golf balls (and the egg of course!) Maybe next spring I'll cross my fingers for a broody and get some eggs to hatch, but I already have this year's...
My chicks are about 4 weeks old, so no, I'm not planning on having her raise them. I sure wish she had gone broody a month ago! I would most definitely have rather her do the hard work! She's only a year old, but I'm contemplating putting her with them. I've never had chicks or a broody before...
I don't have much experience, but this happened to me a couple weeks ago. Do you have them on wood shavings? My chicken guru had me take out all the shavings and put in sand (fortunately I happened to have some). The next morning crop was normal. Perhaps she had eaten a wood shaving or perhaps...
Hi,
I have 7 chickens (buff orpington, wyandotte, brown leghorn) who are about 1 year old. They were laying sporadically over the winter, but started up again in about February or March. They've been giving us 5 or 6 eggs a day for weeks. Suddenly this week we've gotten 0-1 every day. One of the...
Thank you!
Crops were all normal this morning! I just didn't know what normal looked like!

(And I replaced the wood shavings with sand so they have grit)
Hi,
I have 5 chicks that are about 10 days - 2 weeks old. 2 of them (my Easter eggers) I noticed this afternoon had huge distended crops. This is my first time raising chicks, though I've had chickens for 4 years. I called the farmer who sold them to me who suggested I take out the wood chips...
The temperature outside on Monday was 25. We had them in the converted garage Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. Ambient temperature was about 62-68 depending on if we were in there with the space heater. We moved them to an unheated shed Thursday afternoon. Temperature outside was 60. Low was 42...
The GC is the only one I'm not certain could drink from the nipples (though I thought so at the time). The others I have seen drink just fine. I've only ever used the nipples for my big birds and have seen others use them with chicks successfully.
Yes, the heat pad does Not have an auto shut...
Hi everyone,
I have been keeping chickens for about 4 years, but I've always gotten them as 8-16 week olds. Ive never felt like I had the time or appropriate set up for babies. (6 kids, 3 cats, a dog, and a husband who says chickens are my project so it's fine as long as he doesn't have to deal...
I always dry/bake my eggshells, crush them, and give them to the chickens. I mix them in with the "chicken bowl" to compost/treat them. If I forget I will sometimes find a soft shelled egg, but that reminds me to get those eggshells out there and they harden again quickly (within a day or two)...
Hi,
I've had chickens for 3 or 4 years now, but this is my first time with baby chicks. I got them from a local farmer (from whom I've gotten pullets in the past) and I'm pretty sure he uses a heat lamp. They are less than a week old. I got them today and it snowed 6 inches so I moved my brooder...
Well, my aquarium heater kept it from freezing last night. Yay! It was 11 degrees, but I made an insulated blanket (thinsulate curtain fabric) for the bucket, emptied the cold water, and filled it with warm. I think the heater couldn't heat that much cold water, but starting from warmer helped.
I have a 5 gallon bucket with 3 nipples as my watering system, but this is my first winter. I had a small (10 watt) aquarium heater in there which didn't keep the water from freezing. On your recommendations, I bought a 50 watt heater, but the instructions/safety warnings say for indoor use only...
My 2 Ameraucanas (or ee?) Just started laying (hatched Februaryish?) But have been laying beige eggs (lighter than my golden comets by a lot). Will they color as they mature or is this the color? I didn't set out to have colorful eggs, but now that I have these girls, I'm really excited about...
