I have not lost anymore hens after making these changes

I think you are being helpful. Thank you. It's good to question these things. You are correct that too much calcium is a bad thing and it is not standard practice to add grit to feed. That is why I modified my post to clarify i only put in a bit of each. I think it was definitely best to...

I have not lost anymore hens after making these changes

I'd like to think that was the case but i lost one in our second batch too, same cause. That's when i really sat down and did a bunch of reading. I think high Ph water was an issue and that is really easy to fix but I think the bigger problem was that i was giving them too much Rice, Pasta and...

I have not lost anymore hens after making these changes

I use diatomaceous earth for 2 weeks a year. Many people use it year around to kill parasites. I give them a low ratio of grit and ground oyster shell. I follow the directions Purina gives except half on the ground oyster because i had a couple of hens with soft shells that didn't eat the...

I have not lost anymore hens after making these changes

All 6 hens from my first year died 4 from egg yolk peritonitis. Chicken ownership was tough on my chickens physically and me emotionally the first year as I lost chicken after chicken. I had my perches too high and one fell off, a predator got into the fenced in area and got one but the disease...

    Water for feral chickens

...in over a month. I don't use blue tablets. The building is still under construction so I will set something up more permanent before I leave. ****** Incidentally, this hen made her nest right next to the front porch, I put a garbage can lid over her to keep her dry and protect from falling...

    Water for feral chickens

I keep hens in Florida but own a rental property in the cayman islands. There is very little standing water but feral chickens all over the place. On a hot day they are walking around panting searching for water. My hens have such a great life compared to these poor things. I don’t think they...

Eye swollen shut, feathers falling out and possible fever

wyrop and Eggcessive When they sent the report, from the Necropsy it turns out "Marek's disease is suspected". (report attached) Which means my whole flock is probably contaminated. That is a shame, especially since I just added 7 new hens before this one died. I must figure out what to do...

Eye swollen shut, feathers falling out and possible fever

Thank you for the help and for the links. At least if it happens again, i'll be able to diagnose it quicker and put the hen down with minimal suffering. Also i think i did overfeed my hens too. I have a new batch coming up and I am cutting out their treats. The one that died was the largest...
