Good morning all!
My name is Kim and I have been keeping poultry for just over 10 years now. I have had an account here on BYC but let it lapse.
My flock is a mixed up brood some RIR's, Barred, Cinnamon, and a bunch of mutts. I let one of my broody hens (Big Red) set and hatch some eggs last...
Baby turkeys need more protein than the chick starter has. Buy the highest protein feed you can find. I feed mine meat bird feed (with some hard boiled egg to give them a boost). There is a gamebird feed that is wonderful but pricey.
I cannot speak for the living arrangements, my turkeys are separate from the meat chickens.
However, I do feed the meat chickens the same feed as the turkeys (meat bird feed) and everyone is happy, happy, happy!
When my turkeys were poults I also gave them hard boiled egg to give them the extra...
Here is what I do for mine. I have never bought farm store turkeys (I hatch my own) but I did buy farm store meat chicks and almost all died.I will not buy from a farm store again, anyway.
When my turkeys hatch, I feed them regular meat bird feed or gamebird feed (higher protein) but what I do...
I don't mean to be a butt-in-ski here but, I don't suppose you have any pictures of your chicken plucker do you? If not that's fine, just trying to get ideas to make my own.
I have just started breeding Bourbons this spring! I have eggs ready now. Poults will be ready in a couple weeks but those I'm only selling local. I don't feel comfortably shipping live birds yet. What state are you in? Illinois here.
I can try to help.
Turkeys need more protein than a layer. You have to feed them meat bird feed or gamebird feed. The gamebird feed is better (little higher in protein) but more expensive. Mine get meat bird crumbles.
A lot of folks have a difference of opinion on this one. In my humble...
You could have a boy there. My tom didn't look like a tom until one day...BAM...he looked like a tom. I hope that helps! Oh, and don't use the bumps on the legs as a judge, my boy doesn't have anything either.
I will do my best here:
1) Not sure on the exact square footage/bird. I have two (hen & tom) adult heritage breed in a 6x10 chain link dog kennel. They have plenty of room. I'm sure I could comfortably hold another 1-2 hens in there with my tom.
2) Food is completely dependent on how you are...
Putnam county here. I am incubating Bourbon Reds right now. I am breeding them for the first time this year. If anyone is interested in poults I will be happy to meet. Asking $10/poult straight run.
