Can I feed Sunchoke or Yacon to my chickens?

I moved a sun choke bed and left a few damaged tubers behind. Some birds ate some of them but it was not my chickens I don't think. I am growing yacon.Just harvested and turned this year's harvest into chips while I try to find the answer to that question. I suspect there's a better chance if...

Anybody know of a recipe that needs a lot of eggs?

I am sensitive (allergic or whatever) to wheat so I have a fake tortilla that I make with eggs and tapioca flour. It actually tastes like a crepe more than a tortilla but it behaves like a tortilla. I make them in large batches and freeze by the pile. The following recipe is for 3...

    Really mean rooster!

Let me throw out my theory and see if anyone thinks it's got validity. My chickens (including roosters) see me dozens of times a day. I am in and out of their space all the time. From day olds to the ancient ones. I've never had a mean rooster. My theory is that if they see you as one of...

Have you ever had a nice rooster?

I've never had a mean rooster. They all have always known I'm part of the flock and have been sweethearts. They see me in and out many, many times a day, often with goodies, so of course we're all friends.

Topic of the Week - Bumblefoot - Prevention and Treatment

Bumblefoot is always (or mostly) an infection from staph aureus, the same critter that causes MRSA in hospitals. It is ubiquitous., (Sorry if that info already appears in this thread--I didn't read every page). Anyway, There is a mastitis medicine specifically for Staph aureus for milking...

I just need to brag a little...

Update--the hen is now known as Gem. Her record as of yesterday is 97 eggs in a row, & she lays early every day as well which I like. Truly a gem. This week's hatch included some of her eggs to see if she passes it on.

    Can I incubate Pullet eggs???

I just had a hen hatch three pullet eggs. They were peewee size. Hen who laid them had been laying a week or two. Hatch was uneventful. Chicks are vigorous & perfect--though small, but I purposely gave her all small eggs so they fit right in. I expect they will grow to full size with good...

    Can I incubate Pullet eggs?.....

My luck with incubators is not great, so I depend on broody hens. As an aside, when I cross two non broody breeds, I get hens who like to go broody in the first month of laying and then never do again--go figure! Anyhow, If you've been hatching chickens at all you know it doesn't always go...

    Roost fighting and chaos

Well, nice to know it isn't just my spoiled bratty girls! That last half hour is hard on me since they can't seem to find their way back to the roost in the dark. Not that I blame them for that. But that cuts into my sleep. While not a total deal breaker, I really like chickens who allow...

    Roost fighting and chaos

Thanks, chicken chaser 9--sorry I didn't give more info. Nope, only one rooster and he's mellow and doesn't get involved in the pecking. The rest are 18 hens, the biggest offenders are 4 New Hampshires and 5 Black Stars, who have been laying for 6 months and just seem to be ornery on the...

    Roost fighting and chaos

Every night. They act like they hate each other. All raised together. One wants the entire top roost to herself, moves back and forth to peck on anyone who dares be on the top roost. Then the one she pecks turns right around and pecks someone else. I get it that it's chicken behavior. I...

Not yet, but I think it's time to think up one that fits her. I am open to suggestions. She has three half sisters (same mom, different dad) they are 3/4 leghorn and have not been anything like her. Besides which all three have gone broody. Aren't chickens fascinating!!!

I just need to brag a little...

Bother her parents were cross breeds. She began laying at 18 weeks. Here are her eggs--all I have on hand as I have many egg customers. The brown egg is 62 grams compared to her 50 gram eggs. In retrospect the eggs may be greener than true blue. Still...

I just need to brag a little...

And see if anyone else thinks this is an unusual hen. First of all, she is an F2 generation (half and half rooster X half and half hen) half Americauna and half Leghorn. Her eggs are blue. It took 50 days for her to get UP to medium size eggs. But the most amazing thing to me is that she...

     natural diet

In my diet??? I do not eat grains so no pancakes and no sugar or syrup. I have a big box of syrups and jams I'm looking to give away if anyone can come get them. So I'm the wrong person to ask about palatability. I don't like to mask food with sugar. There is both a biologic and...
