Feathers are coming in force.
Are new feathers itchy enough to cause the li'l chicks to scratch/twist/hunker down in the bedding and dust themselves repeatedly in the DE/pine shavings?
They look like dusty little crazy birds.
Close inspections shows no sign of mites or the like, no skin...
Heat lamps create a temperature differential which causes humidity to collect in your coop.
Moisture in cold weather = frostbite and illness.
Avoid this for the health of your birds.
My dominique chicks are clearly interested in beak filing on their own.
They rub their beaks back and forth a couple of times each on whatever the hardest thing in the coop happens to be, wood in this case.
Anybody use something like those pumice stones that parrot owners seem to keep in cages?

Pen was around 78 deg.F last night and li' Doms are still not gravitating to the light.
I guess body language really is the best indicator.

Brooder box had lights in a hood, temp always around 95F underneath it.
Chicks slept wherever they seemed to nod off.
I just moved them to a deluxe pen I built, 4'x5', same lights under a hood in one area.
Ambient temp is around 80F, closer to 90F under the hood...
