This is a nine week Black Copper Marans. It has had its comb and wattles for a few weeks now, its sister is visible below. They're both the same age, this one just matured super fast. I haven't noticed any attempts to start crowing. Is this a pullet? I've seen some Marans that look like this and...
I just came home and saw one of my pullets was a little... bloody. I have my cockerel quarantined primarily because he was eating eggs. I have picked her up and I took the pictures below; I also put her in a 4'x4'x3' box to protect her from the other pullets to allow her to heal.
She's been...
I have a problem with eggs being eaten also. Unfortunately I don't know how many eggs are being laid daily (seeing as it is winter) so I can't assess "how bad" it is. I got 2 eggs from my 5 hens today and a third egg shell was on the ground. The eggs were cold so they were layed a while ago.
I'm at my wits end! HELP! I have 5 pullets (6 months old) and one cockerel (same age). I got my first egg on November 14th 2011, I've been getting one egg a day for the most part. I've been finding a lot of shells and eaten eggs in the coop lately. During the christmas break I spent a lot of...
Checked on my girls this evening for eggs and saw two. Picked them up and immediately I noticed a difference. This egg felt wrinkled, it was spotty (none of my egg layers have ever produced a spotted egg) and the sounds it made were very different. When I moved my fingers around it I got the...
I put oyster shells in their coop they didn't really eat much of it *shrugs* They're not eating the entire egg either and the shells from the remnants are very firm, which is making me doubt the fact that there is a calcium deficiency. Hopefully I'll know in a few days if the oyster shells are...
...her from the flock and she wasn't a happy camper, the next day I saw a slime in the coop. I presume either she only laid egg white/yolk or she ate the shell, but I didn't see any evidence of a shell.
*sigh* These pullets are confusing! (They're about 6 months old now all of them).
Thanks!
I hard boiled a few of my eggs recently and they were definitely a challenge to peel!
The best trick I learned was to use the anatomy of the egg to my advantage. The "wider" tip has the air bubble normally, I crack that and then peel from there. If the membrane is too hard to peel, I grab a...
I saw a half eaten egg this morning so I went after it. Pretty sure I found the culprit! And this pullet had a bloody comb so I checked it out. I see the word BlueKote everywhere I presume I would need to apply it there?
The Culprit!
Poor Pullet
I haven't built nest boxes due to the dimensions of the coop. I'll build a couple if it would help only one hen is laying to the best of my knowledge thinking of setting a webcam up to watch them
Frostbite is impossible lol I keep them in my garage which is heated to 40 F ( ~5C) I may separate her from the others for a day to see if eggs come back.
