    Black Copper Marans discussion thread

Hi all. I finally got four FBCM in Aug. and need help determining if one is a rooster. Of the four I am pretty sure two are roosters and one is a hen. The one in question is the one on the left against the wall. My initial thought was rooster but the comb and wattles are less than the...

Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Hi all. Hoping to get some help identifying the sex of my Marans. I got four, two week old FBCM on Sept. 2. That makes them about 10 weeks. Until this week I thought for sure I had three hens and one rooster but now I am leaning more towards three roosters and one hen. One is very clearly a...

    Broody Hen Care

We had a Golden Sebright go broody on us so we decided to let nature take over. We left the hen in her nesting box and let her decide when to leave to eat, poop, and such. No issues at all. Each night when we shut the coop door we checked for "new" egss under her and took them. Exactly 21...

Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Hello all. We are fairly new to the chicken family. We got our first flock of 9 last April and love it. We have been considering adding Marans to our flock and am a little confused. Is FBCM French Black Copper Marans? In my reading it appears there are Marans with and without shank...

Isolating birds to show at local fair

We got a pair of Old English Game birds a couple of months ago for my son to show in a local fair this Aug. He is only 8 and the birds are two years olds and handle wonderful. The male was already shown so his comb is trimmed already. Perfect size for my son. The problem I have is the...

    Dog with Chicks?

We have two black lab/ Golden Retreiver mix and we introduced them to our first batch of chicks when they were only one. They immediatley tried to playfully put them in their mouth but ONE quick, loud, NOOO was all it took for us. We were lucky. They are very good together now. I think our...

Two meat birds died at three weeks

I am using standard feed. My brooder and coop/run floors are made of 1/4 inch hardward cloth so the poop goes to a catch board or the ground. Will this help prevent any disease? I was worried about the pressure on their toes but all seems good.

First time out in the yard on their own what do I do?

I plan on letting mine out tomorrow for the first time. They vary in age from 3 weeks to probably 6. Plan on putting them in an old grass rabbit run that hasn't been used in two years. I like the idea of keeping them fenced in at first.

My chicks 1st night out in coop

I just seperated my chicks today. They are a few weeks apart and the size is starting to really show. The bigger birds are in a new encloser but not the coop. This will be my first time introducing new chickens to my existing flock and I only want to do it once. I have tried to read up to...

Two meat birds died at three weeks

When you say you cleaned it do you mean processed it? I would be careful about eating anything I personally didn't kill or take in. You never know what happen. I know it stinks when you get close but I would be soo nervous.

Two meat birds died at three weeks

Birds seems like they were average. Brooder is 6x4 so shouln't be a factor with birds at this size. I was feeding 24/7 but stopped yesterday. I am still using a heat lamp in one very end of the brooder and starting today it is going to be turned off during the day. It got down to 35 yesterday...

    Black Copper Marans discussion thread

Looking for some advise on my BCM's. I got my first three chicks, two days old, about three weeks ago. They were small compared to my otherchicks - 2 Leghorn, 2 Australorps, 3 EE, and 2 BO. After two weeks they were still relitively small and one died. Not sure what happen but the 3 BCM...

Two meat birds died at three weeks

This is my second time raising meat birds. The first time I had 13 and one died on the third day. It looked sick from day 1 so it didn't suprise me. All other 12 went 8 went perfectly. This year I got 24, and today I found two dead when I came home from work. They had plenty of water and...

General housing questions on a new coop design

I just put in a poop board and it is 8-12 inch from the top of the roost. I am going to lower the roost closer because I have one Americana who likes to lay "where ever" she is. This includes the roost and the egg doesn't survive the drop. I am hoping this helps.

    When to butcher?

This is only my second batch of Cornish X but my first went pretty good. We kept feed available (24%) for the entire time. The main thing I learned was to keep the feed high enough to make sure the birds had to stand in order to eat. I had mine butchered at 8 weeks and they weighed approx 5.5...

Ok, deep breath, letting them free range without supervision...

We have only had chickens for a year and we are free ranging from dusk to dawn (Fort Knox for night). I made my kids very aware that at some point we will lose a chicken (or more) to whatever. We live in the country and my biggest fears are the typical coons, fox, coyotes, and hawks. On a...

should coup be left open for ventilation or closed at night

Keep your vents open all the time. We live in cold climate and never shut them. Helps keep moisture down, smell, and air flow. I did learn the hard way to make sure the vents are cover with hardware cloth or chicken wire. We had a coon climb up the molding nad under the roof vent and kill 9...
