I was getting nervous that they were some type of "bad bug" and we have new chicks so I didn't want to take any chances...I downloaded one of those Bug ID apps (Picture Insect). Looks like they are called springtails and are harmless but an indication of too much moisture in and around the coop...
They seem to be some type of tiny beetle...it does not look like a mite or flea or anything like that...I am totally stumped! There are a lot of them though :( Here is a closeup. We are in New York.
Hello,
I noticed an abundance of these bugs in the coop. There are none of any of the chickens but they are in and around the wood. I was thinking of doing a deep clean with some diatomaceous earth but would like to know what I am dealing with first. Our coop is 4 years old but not rotten so not...
I had a similar situation except mine were under a broody hen for 22 days and then she left the eggs to tend to the hatched chicks...I put this one in an incubator but its day 24 and thinking its died...there is no movement.
This egg was in with my broody for 21 days and then she abandon it to care for the hatched chicks. I only took it out and put in the incubator as a last ditch effort to help. The temp and humidity on the incubator is doubled checked and working. I've never water candled before because I...
Thank you so much! I used water that was 100 degrees and before I candled it with a candling flashlight and there was no movement at all in the egg and no cracks or pips. This was done a last resort before unplugging the incubator. That is great advice about the egg temperature. I will try that...
Hi All-
MY broody hen was sitting on two fertile eggs. One hatched on day 19 and she abandon the nest shortly thereafter with the chick. I put the egg in an incubator and it is now day 24 with no movement. I tried candling the eggs and I can not detect movement. I tried water candling and this...
Hi There!!
I couldn't resist these two mille fleur d'uccle chicks...this is my first time with this breed, as I have only silkies.
Could anyone tell me if they are looking like roos or pullets? They are 3 weeks old!
Thanks!!!
Thank you everyone for all of the advice!! After a few hours she kicked the two silkies out, pretty violently...and kept the two millie fleur...they stayed warm through the night and were eating and drinking in the coop this morning. I am concerned on what will happen if she heads down the ramp...
Hey!! I just made the transfer!!!! It seems likes going great so far....I ended up getting two silkies and two milliefleurs at the chicken place....I've been watching on the nest cam, praying she will know how to direct them for food and water!!! I'll keep you posted if you want!!
Thank you!! All of my silkies have been broody at some point, but this girl is so persistent!! it breaks my heart...and we don't have a rooster, so I couldn't let her set her own eggs.
Thank you!! Can I ask, do you handle the the chicks or leave them alone? My hens are very docile and I have raised them since incubating their eggs....but I don't want to stress them out!
Hello!
My silkie hen has been broody for almost a month. I have finally sourced some silkie chicks and I am planning on getting a few and sticking them under her come nightfall. I would love advice on this process. Do I need an additional heat source in the coop? I have a radiant heat...
I do not think it is weird at all, it seems like you are just being a human and seemingly, a kind one. It's nice that you have compassion for your animals...and you shouldn't beat yourself up for that. All lives matter no matter how small or insignificant they seem...and as you said, it was the...
