I added one Lakeshore Egger to my order last April. She was a very friendly and curious chick: one of our favorites. I don't have a solo picure of her on my tablet, but she is in the pic posted, between my Speckled Sussex and Buff Orpington. I think she is lovely!
She hatched on April 2nd and...
I have never seen her in the nesting boxes, but I assumed (based on egg color) that I was getting eggs from her for a couple months at the end of last year. I am not getting any pale eggs like that right now, so I guess it is a waiting game...
I have had hens crow before, but she is taking it...
My 10 month old Swedish Flower Hen pullet has become standoffish, begun crowing, and insistently tidbit calls to the other hens. (I haven't witness mounting...yet.)
Last night I noticed she looks like she is developing spurs! Is this just behavioral (hen acting like a rooster) or is something...
Barred Plymouth Rock
Speckled Sussex
Appenzeller Spitzhauben
Easter Egger
Welsummer (or Cuckoo Marans)...I love them equally!
Buff Orpington
We have a pet flock, and these breeds always end up being our favorite hens...cold hardy, amiable, and kid friendly...colorful eggs basket too!
So last evening my son (9yrs old) and I went to head out to close up the coop (7:30ish). He stepped out the door ahead of me and says "bear!" I couldn't see it immediately because our back deck sits above the walkout basement and my view was blocked by the railing. My two boston terriers rush...
We had that problem with our Boston Terriers...granted, they are a gassy breed to begin with, but they were making everyone downright miserable until we found the right food that worked for them. It was trial and error, but because our male Boston also has food allergies we settled on a venison...
Well "little pip" just hatched! We kept checking on her all day and she did a speedy zip between checks. We got to see her working on kicking out of the shell...very active little one. Now we have two more pipping. :fl
All 20 chicks made it safely. :D I have been trying to id everyone...I have 6 rare breed assortments that I have been trying to figure out. I end up with 2 Egyptian Fayoumis chicks in the mix...one of the few breeds I was hoping not to get. :hmm (I have a pet flock of docile breeds on restricted...
I am using a Janoel 12 and this is its first test hatch. I have an independent digital calibrated thermometer and hygrometer. I checked the temperature and humidity several times a day and they were always fairly steady. I am guessing my thermometer calibration is on the high side though. Will...
Thank you! I went and checked my notes and today is day 18. I started my day one 24 hours after I set my eggs. Things are definitely off to an interesting start.
Tonight I put my Easter Eggers and Cuckoo Marans eggs into day 18 lockdown and was surprised by a pipped egg! The chick was rocking and a rollin' and chirping up a storm. Quickly got the eggs back in the incubator.
What a day! My shipped chicks from Meyer Hatchery didn't arrive today like I...
The last time I picked up chicks at the post office there was complaining in the back that they couldn't reach someone to pick up her chicks. The mail carrier wasn't happy that they had to deliver noisy chicks. I am early on my driver's route, so she will only have to put up with my chicks for...
We are in a small mountain town here too. In the past (in another rural town), I was able to pick them up as soon as they arrived. Not this tiny town...I have to wait to pick my chicks up when the window opens at 9 a.m. No exceptions. :hmm
My son was so upset his chicks didn't come today...I...
